Diameter td5 front half shafts.
I had a C.V. joint failing on me and that damaged my half shaft splines. The damaged half shaft has a diameter off 31mm the replacement half shaft had only 27mm diameter. According to an calculator on the internet a 31mm shaft is 1.55 times as stong as an 27mm shaft.
Is the 31mm shaft an original Land Rover part for a 2003 90 td5 farmers pick-up or is it an aftermarket half shaft?

I broke my front half shaft and when I sourced a replacement it was thinner and although you would think the 27 mm shaft would be weaker from experience a 27mm shaft will flex whereas a 31mm shaft will shatter td5s had 31mm whereas 27mm were fitted to 300tdi's although it seems wrong 27mm will be stronger hope that helps ed

I am normally not a careful driver, I have no hesitation flooring the throttle if needed.
But me 31mm half shaft didn't have a problem with that. My C.V. Joint went and that damaged the splines on my 31mm halfshaft.
The first time off-road after that I broke the replacement 27mm halfshaft. And I wasn't behaving badly that day. Roel

Ah I see I'm neither a gentle driver I use the stage 2 tune properly. Haven't broken my 27mm towed 3500kgs frequently and sainsburys plains had no issue, was it a new shaft?

I have a PSI motorsport box. http://www.psi-motorsport.com/turbodiesel/...&lg=en
in the mister Zulu setting.
I know it's not as good as a proper tune, but it was cheap and I can switch it on and off. And with a little surfing on the internet I think these use least bad system off power box tuning. Mr. Green
But that's another discussion.

The shaft was new and my supplier likes to help me out with this one but this shaft came with the part number for the 2003 90 Td5. So I find it strange that my original shaft was 31 mm and I got a replacement off 27mm. He also mentioned that the new Puma shaft are even thinner. Shocked Roel

I can't comment on puma shafts as I've never really looked, some new parts aren't as good quality. Did your new half shaft have a bush on the shaft? And did you put the shims on the end of the drive flange before the circlip?

Yep bush and shims.
The 31mm has a nicer finish so that why I thought that the 31mm could be an aftermarket HD shaft as mentioned in the original post. But you had 31 mm shafts too? Roel

Could have been a picture of mine. Same thing shiny 31mm one and the 27mm darkish. Mine was a little less dark as It didn't see any oil yet. Mr. Green

This really confirms I had original 31mm shafts. Thanks very much for this info.

Back to my supplier in a few weeks. Roel
