Clutch is the main thing on earlier MYs - the original ones were made from cheese and were soon replaced by a better (but still not brilliant) version. I think they leak worse around the windscreen due to some bad welds. It's not a good idea to lift them as the geometry of the engine and driveline is worse than the TD5. Now I'm out of ideas
p.s. just remembered the heated rear windscreen elements wore away and broke (on the trim?) on earlier ones - redesigned on later ones. Leaks around the sills and front of the roof due to poor fitting/riveting/caulking. RHS intercooler hose wearing through on sharp edge towards front. Turbo leaking at the manifold-turbo joint (look for soot). Many people find 2nd to 3rd gear change a bit awkward but it's normal. Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Chassis is finished in wafer thin black paint so check it and expect every external bit finished black to peel and go rusty. Steve.

Ok so under sealing seems a good idea! What kind of recalls etc were done on them? I'm going to look at a few at Ripon land rover over the bank holiday and should hopefully come away with something.

Don't know about recalls but make sure the EGR valve sounds healthy when you switch off. Should make a gentle "chukka-chukka-chukka" sound when it self-cleans. If you can't hear it or it's particularly rattly you're looking at problems.
There have been several firmware updates. Also look here for starters... http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic1784.html Matt Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Throw "recall" into the search facility, select topics only and it will throw up a fair few examples. Alternatively get details of the vehicles you are interested in, login to Topix and check if there are any outstanding recalls on that vehicle. Search for Topix if you need to know more Steve.
