I can't quite understand why instead of requesting Madrid to be a hub airport for people travelling from further south or east (well Dubai and the Mid East does not service Madrid easily - they service outside of the uk, places like Munich, Zurich, Rome, Dusseldorf etc), the government did not send the Ark Royal to the Canary Islands initially, and then to Gibraltar afterwards to collect from southern Spain. I would presume that at least 2000 people could have been accomodated on matresses on the decks, and then it could have returned to Portsmouth with much flag waving. I don't support this government, but they have missed an opportunity here. Instead, they nominated Madrid where 100 coaches would be waiting. Instead, 50 coaches may arrive at Calais later tonight and therefore, arrive at Madrid in 24-36 hrs.
