TD5 Fuel pump Death
Well Gents / Ladies, i've spent the last 2 hours searching and ive now got 2 answers with which to go by, im now asking is there a possible 3rd.

A week ago i jumped in my TD5 90 Defender, key in the ignition and i noticed the fuel pump isn't running, took the key out put it back and bang it jumped to life and done so until this morning when everything is working apart from my fuel pump, ive checked all fuses OK. I have got some water in the drivers seat box from driving in heavy rains.

1) Dead Fuel pump
2) Yellow relay under drivers seat or
3)

And is there a way to check before i drop the tank and the relay.

Thanks in advance

Check the relay with a known good one or just get a new one. Double check the earths in the seat box, it's a damn site easier to get those basics out of the way before dropping the tank. Personally I would go for the top approach to the pump, i.e. cut an access hole in the floor, that's what I did when I changed my pump, the tank and everything stays undisturbed, access to the pump in mine would only take 10minutes and most of that is emptying the junk out from the back of the motor!

You should have two yellow relays next to each other. Try swapping them.
The fuel pump relay is very voltage sensitive. Hold your fingrt on it while cranking to see if it vibrates. If it does check your earth connections. I ultimately cured mine by fitting a new battery.

Also agree with the cutting of the floor method
Done that on my TD5
Otherwise it's a nightmare, especially with anti-roll bars that you can't get off Banging Head Defender 90 XS TD5 (03 Reg)

Ok, ive now discovered the pump is good, ive traced continuity from the engine bay right back to the fuel pump all is good there, now when i get to the relay behind the gear shifter there is a green relay that looks as if the socket has had some heat and if i bridge the pins 30 and 87 the fuel pump comes to life..

How do i test the relay as i dont have a spare one of these!

Swop it for something you don't need for now, heater fan relay or spotlight one if you have them fitted.

Thanks for the Replies, Im completely lost now.

1) All wiring front to back is good for continuity
2) Fuel pump is good, tested from green relay by gear shifter.
3) Checked relays with 12v supply and multimeter and they are all good
4) all fuses are good

And yet i still have no fuel pump when i turn the ignition on....could it be my ECU or even ignition?

I'd be looking for one of those obscure fuses that crop up in the wiring diagrams or not! Look through all the fuse boxes.

If it's turning over, but not firing - faulty crank sensor?
Is the EML lit?
Has it been plugged in to check for faults? It wasn't me!

Have you checked the relay while cranking? The voltage may not be high enough.

Do you know if the + supply from the ecu to the relay is live when cranking?
If you solder a wire onto a pin, you can pierce the wires at the ecu to take the readings. I imagine it is 12v as it is a relay your turning on. There shouldn't be a fuse inbetween ecu wire and relay.

If there is no crank reading, the fuel pump still runs. (or at least when my ecu died and indicated no Crank the fuel pump still ran.)

I haven't checked the + from the ECU yet, as im getting all the relays standing to attention when the key is inserted, just for the life of me the pump isnt firing up, but i know its working. what is baffling is the way it stopped, a week earlier it did the same thing and after attempting it a couple times i took the key out put it back in and it worked, then she was fine until friday when the same happened and has never come back..

Have you tried Starthearn Engineering for a diagnostic scan? Not 100% sure what they charge
