Chock wheels. Release hand brake, get underneath, feel if there is any movement in drum, feel cable to see if it under strain. If drum is seized, try a good whack with a hammer. Can sometimes be the cable though, and easiest option is to cut through the cable to release, but for you warranty I assume.

Hi Andy,
Thanks for the reply, that's exactly what the AA did and it worked a treat. Now I know for next time, though now taking back to dealers to clean out drum. Thanks again Andy |

I never put it on the handbrake when parked for a longer time. But I can say that easily as The Netherlands is flat specially were I live on the sea-bottom. Roel

Defender handbrakes are notorious for this - bad design for an offroad vehicle. Once mud and water get in there it jams. It is why so many fit X-brakes.
Only real solution is to strip it down and clear it out. Will work then - until the next speck of mud or water enters anyway |

Thanks for your replies. I drove through a heavy rain storm on Friday so maybe rain water got into the drum then though this was on Tarmac. No off-roading so pretty poor for this to happen. Anyway have had no problems since but will arrange for garage to clean it out.
Cheers Andy |
