Just googled land rover 90 transfer box's and it came up with the differences of transfer box's used from early 90/110's to late td5's and it looks like all early 4 cyl none TDI used the 1:1.6 transfer box which answer's my question so not entirely sure wether to go for a 1:1.4 or a 1:1.2 discovery transfer box Graham

Graham you can tell from the serial number which ratio you have...check out ashcroft site for number location and specs.
http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/in...oductId=45 As for which ratio to run...will pend on tyre size too... a tdi is likely to struggle with 1.2 disco box and say 285 tyres. N. |

You will know if you have a 1.6 box as at 60 mph it's screaming. Not a standard fit for yours. 265 and a 1.2 box depends on a few things. If you tow don't do it, if you have played or are willing to play with pump, and possibly bigger intercooler it will be ok. Got to question miles you drive, quality of existing box, cost of replacement box. It won't save you any money fuel economy wise.

If the box is in good shape I would go for bigger tires. Roel

As Andy says, 265s with bigger intercooler and pump tweak, will sit nicely at motorway speeds.... Maybe nicely is the wrong word, as it is a 200tdi after all.. N. |

There should be a sticker on your transfer box with the ratio on it, it's my understanding that the 1.4/1 transfer box was used from the Turbo Diesel onwards, 1.6/1 was used on normally aspirated defenders prior to that. 2005 Td5 90 XS

I think the word you are looking for is Agreeably. I have a standard 1:4 box and 265/75/16 and I usually cruise quite happily between 50 and 60 on motorways. I anything over 60 and the noise and MPG is awful, at the moment I'm returning around 33-34MPG. Cornish, if you look on the back of your T'box next to the handbrake drum there should be a sticker which will show if you have a 1:6 or 1:4 ratio box. Personally, with your tyres I wouldn't want to go faster than 50mph anyway due to the noise and the grip on road. Remember, its not how fast you can go, its how fast you can stop! |

You can see the end of the serial number in that photo above, just to right of bottom left, it ends 14D on that box. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top
