Where to drill my dashboard
So, if i am mounting a small switch for a set of spots where is good to drill. I dont want to drill to then find put there is something behind that precents me from mounting due to lack of space behind! There seems to be a big open flat space to the right of the radio?

The space either side of the centre panel has a void behind BUT - if you decide to sell the vehicle on you may find the next owner is not so keen and to replace that panel is a £1000 job.

Why not use a genuine switch in the existing blank or consider a switch in the cubby box face

Not sure which model you have but if you have a TD5 and you want a fairly discrete location you can use the original position Land Rover Left for a switch which is hidden on the metal section directly below the warning lights at the RHS of the instrument panel. If you have a look just above where your right knee would be whilst driving there should be a small rectangular blanking piece in there. This hole is perfectly sized for the old style switches which lived in the three switch panel by your right knee in the pre td5 models.

Alternatively if you have a TD5/Puma model you could fit an OE heated seat switch into one of the blank switch locations and replace the facia of it with the blank (do a search there are good threads on this).

I would try to avoid drilling holes in plastics unnecessarily though, I'm afraid there is nothing I hate more than random mismatched switches stuffed in the dash all over the place, also usually accompanied with terrible wiring. Not meant to be a comment/judgement on your fitment but I have seen some terrible wiring in land rovers previously and indeed had to replace burnt out wiring.

like others have said , avoid drilling large panels , go oem switch or a panel that can be replaced at a later date

Or...

Take out the centre console, fit your accessories and then install a Nakatenenga pod on the top of the dash. Everything hidden away and a great OEM look.

i drilled a hole for a switch just where you are thinking and like the switch position, im not so worried about it affecting resale as its a keeper and i cant imagine it being a huge deal....there is plastic support ribbing behind this section but its easy to cut what you need out and quite a bit of space there.
