There is some interesting stuff on the J W Speaker site, if LED lights interest you. |

Ah, so many variations on the theme
I always think of DRL like a volvo, permanent 5w markers front and rear, like a lot of EU countries now required. Some of the comments seem to be what I think of as dim dipped, either 5w in headlight or part illumination of main filament, which seems common on some cars these days (no rear lights). So Ken, how does DRL work with the front sidelight, what makes it always on, a change to the loom? Disco 3 gone but the memory of the bills remain... XS 110 Utility maybe one day..... (did they fix the quality yet?) |

The mobile centre DRL's come with a little box of tricks that simply needs a signal from the sidelights and a 12volt feed. The full kit comes with Econoseal plugs so is simply just a plug and play into your existing wiring and an attachment to a 12 volt feed (back of the alternator is usually the easiest) When you start the engine the DRL's will come on (I can't remember the light output - but they are bright - but I'm sure Tim will be reading this). If you then turn on your sidelights or headlights the DRL's will drop in brightness and become a sidelight (the lamp contains two LED's) This is how legislation says they should work. However if required, you can also wire them up slightly differently.... So whenever the ignition is on you have the brighter DRL - regardless of what position your headlamp switch is - so even with sidelights or headlights turned on, you will always have a brighter DRL. But with ignition off, if you turn your sidelights on (i.e. parking in a 40mph area) then you will jusy have the sidelight part of the lamp illuminated. I know as I fitted the kit to Lindsay Porters 110.... with Tim from mobile centre watching and taking the P*** lol. There will be full feature in LRM next month. Ian |

Hi Ian,
Thanks for the comprehensive reply! One question, to confirm the DRL's are front only? Looks like I will be buying LRM next month Keep seeing references to "Lindsay Porters 110" - is this some sort of project vehicle, and your are or work for a company outfitting it? DRL's are front only.... Lindsay Porter is one of the technical writers for LRM - has a white 300Tdi RoW spec 110... which was a 300Tdi, but is currently being fitted with a new engine (by me lol). I run IRB Developments (www.IRBdevelopments.com), and somehow got roped into doing lots of work for Mr Porter (not that I mind) which is being featured in LRM. This months article is fitting an uprated radiator and a few other bits. Ian |

Ah, thanks Ian
Was that the LHD from Witman that was SVA'd (or IVT as it is now) and converted to RHD? I think I read about that in LRM last year in which case I know the one. I have been reading LRO lately, but I am mostly indifferent and a flip my vote at the smallest interesting article the other way waiting for them to form a coalition.... Next month being July on sale June I guess... will check WHS at lunchtime... Disco 3 gone but the memory of the bills remain... XS 110 Utility maybe one day..... (did they fix the quality yet?) |
