That is a bit like how long is a piece of string.
If the chassis repairs have been done well then it may be OK. Surface rust on a cross member is easily dealt with. I suppose it is all to do with age of the vehicle and price. If the vehicle is not that old you have to ask yourself why has the chassis rotted away and what condition is the remaining original chassis in. Remember that chassis rot from the inside as well as the outside. |

I don't know how to tell if the repair is good, I'll put a picture here.

Its adeqaute but it has just been plated a good repair would have the all the rot cut back and the plate welded into the section. You have to ask yourself what is behind the plating

I see. I have been told to go along with a hammer and tap the chassis, if it goes through or makes a mark it's rotten. How reliable would this method be?

If I were in that position I'd rather buy something where I can see the rot as opposed to a patch repair with such high class welding like that. Oh and it's all very well taking a hammer to a prospective purchase - just make sure the owner is happy with you bashing away on it. Steve.
Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW. [Insert something impressive here such as extensive list of previous Land Rovers or examples of your prestigeous and expensive items, trinkets, houses, bikes, vehicles etc] http://forums.lr4x4.com I used to be Miserable ...but now I'm ecstatic. |

Walk away. Once you start patching it's downhill from there.

The chassis looks like it's never had any sort of protective coating or any love, which means the rest of the car probably hasn't had any either.
Find a similar one on ebay that is immaculate of the same age, spec and mileage then deduct ~£3000 - if they are asking more then walk away.. A new galv chassis + Labour is ~£2200 so if the rest of the vehicle is okay and 2k under budget then consider it |
