No it's not, naturally with any new model (and a 2007 was just that) there will be failings that will be rectified with recalls and redesign. You keep your old TDI as unrefined as it may be you're obviously well suited to one another.
My 08 Puma has given me sterling service albeit a play thing and not a high miler but no clutch change, gearbox, transfer box blah, blah, blah, it is still on original running gear. EGR Valve change that is all. At least with this one you should be getting an element of reliability. Naturally even with all the work which I would discuss with a potential buyer and not publicise due to your very own reaction it will not impact on the price at all. It may scare people off though? VW? This is a Land Rover Forum. Stick your reliability on a VW forum where it may count for something. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! To date my 2014 Defender has been more reliable (zero defects/warranty work) than any of the 4 VW Golfs that I bought brand new. My last new Golf came with a free internal shower facility - it took the VW dealership at least 5 attempts to stop the rear wash/wipe hose coming apart inside the headlining and dripping on passengers seated in the rear - or spraying water into the rear hatch cavity and corroding the lock and central locking system. Sometimes German engineering is just as bad as British Leyland's approach to design and manufacture. |

Thanks for the replies all - I will agree this does seem like a lot to be replaced on a 100k motor, albeit a starter motor, egr, thermostat, and UJ's are all fairly re-occuring topics accross puma owners. Unlike your average 100k motor on a fwd hatch our Landy has definitely worked hard in the past and naturally mechanical parts do fail, but these can easily be replaced which we have had a 'no expenses spared' attitude towards, making it the workhorse it is today
I think we touched unlucky with the transfer box & head gasket, I think the head had gone when we got it but it wasn't a case of oil in water, rather the water dissapearing into one of the cylinders so under normal driving wasn't staggeringly obvious to tell. On the flip side we've now got a strong engine with a new transfer box ready for another 100k+ The heaters still take a lifetime to warm up and my right foot gets wet when it's chucking it down but that's what makes it a more 'interesting' journey too & from work |
