300tdi boost
Hi,

This week I have been driving around with an adjustment I did to my 300tdi with some good results.

I took off the wastgate actuator pipe and the pipe to the FIP from the turbo and instead plumbed these into the intake manifold directly using the blanking plug on the back of the manifold.

I bought a banjo bolt and union (M12x1.5) from ebay as well as a brass T piece all with 5mm ID hose connectors.

I have a VGT from B.A.S as well as an Allisport intercooler. I had already tweeked the FIP and was getting good performance, but the mod seems to have further increased performance but also lowered the EGT.

Really enjoying the results so far. I haven't checked the pressure, but having much lower EGT's (from 650 now down to more like 400) I am assuming I am not damaging the engine.

Essentially it means that there is compensation for the pressure loss through the pipes and intercooler and ensures good pressure at the manifold.

From a week of driving it (about 600 miles this week!) I would say it all seems to be very positive.

Has anyone else discovered/done this mod?

Great to hear your results... I've got the same setup as yourself (turbo/intercooler) and have been reading the same recommendation on the defender source forum. Any chance of seeing a photo of your connections?
Also wondering where your fueling is set at (diaphragm cone position), did you need to adjust it or the turbo afterwards?
Thanks.

I have already adjusted the feeling up both on the cone and also on the max fuel at the rear of the pump. This change to the boost now seems to make it run cooler (EGT) as well as more power.

Really pleased with the results.

Thanks for the photos... Agreed, that's tidy bit of work Smile
You've inspired me to follow suit...though I'm sure it won't look quite as nice.
Any boost readings or comparisons? (I'm sure they are similar just timed better to the FIP...)

I'll let you know the results on this side of the pond.

Thanks again!

Re: 300tdi boost
Hi Alex,

I also have the same turbo set up on my 300Tdi. When you say you took off the "pipe to the FIP from the turbo" did you blank the outlet on the turbo itself?

As I understand it (and from you pictures), the pipe from the fuel injection pump goes into the bottom of your T-Piece, one side goes to the intake manifold at the back and the other side of the T-Piece goes to the wastegate actuator. If so that would leave an outlet on the compressor side of the turbo...I think...

If this is the case, do you know the correct size thread for the turbo compressor outlet?

Here is my current set-up, it nice to see someone else with engine bay OCD as well haha:

.

What is the physical effect of this set-up? Does it cause the wastegate to open at a different time? To be honest my VGT is a much quieter turbo than the standard 300Tdi Turbo offering, and I kinda of miss the turbo whistle!

Cheers

Rob

See here for the build thread:

http://www.devon4x4.com/index.php?option=c...Itemid=106

Awesome Tdi: Well it is and it isn't. Despite the following mods it still doesn't go anywhere near as well as I think it should!

- VNT from IRB
- Allisport drop-in replacement intercooler
- Rebuilt Turner Engineering 300Tdi with AMC Turner Performance Cylinder head
- Uprated fueling (diaphragm turned and starwheel)
- Donaldson "Wolf" spec airitake.

I initially thought it was because the engine was "tight" after the rebuild, but after 12,000 miles I am still looking for more get up and go.

Cheers G-Mack, a lot of blood, sweat and tears went into it! Took almost 3 years in total, although the final part was thrashed together in a month because I had moved to Aus by that time.

Maybe I should put the build thread on this forum so others could take a look? Anyone have any answers to my initial post...the O/P seems to have disappeared!

Cheers

Rob

Hi Rob,

Sorry for the delayed reply. Work has been crazy busy so not much time to get on here!

You guessed correctly about the pipe from the t piece going to the FIP. This does leave the outlet from the turbo that needs blanking. I have not yet found a blanking plug for it as it is an odd thread - I think it is a BSF thread. So I have just a temp blanking pipe on it at present.

The actual effect of this mod is it ensures there is the full 1 bar of turbo pressure at the manifold by the turbo vanes moving to give more boost at any given engine revs.

When the fuelling is matched to this you get a very useable increase in power. Probably just what you are looking for if you think your set up is not producing what you feel it should.

Love your engine ocd! So pleased it's not just me!
