if it plays up again, you might find it easier to work on when its on the bench, just lift the engine/gbox and tbox out together then you will be able to see the drum and parts inside easily with plenty of space to work in.

On a serious note, it actually IS very easy to work on the TDCi handbrake on the bench.

Once the handbrake drum is off, the only extra work involved in removing the backplate assembly is to free off the lever end of the cable (pull back the rubber gaitor round the lever, remove split pin and then clevis, then pull cable back under the vehicle) and then undo the four setscrews which hold the backplate tot he transferbox. 10 minutes max. It really is easier to work on it on the bench!

that's a very good point !

having already replaced the cable previously even I can manage that bit.....

and as said I can imagine the retaining pins being FAR easier to replace on the bench.......was I cursing trying to put the one back together !!!

If you read my earliest posts, a clattering handbrake when hot and coasting to a halt was my reason for joining this forum in the first place (dealer failed to fix it 3 times) - LandyZone wasn't exactly helpful either Banging Head

A while later I bought an X-Brake intending to wait until the warranty ran out to fit it - I never have.

Since then the clattering has gone, to be replaced with metallic scraping, to be replaced with... silence Bow down

Like most things on a Defender, if it ain't broke don't fix it - it will probably go away, fall off or rust off. Use your time for fun things like cutting holes in your wing Laughing

Matt

p.s. my other reason for joining the forum was sticky gear changes - that's fixed itself too Thumbs Up Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

You should know by now that's not the way our friend Caterham works. At some point in the past he has taken the parable of worried the Defender owner to heart. This is the sad tale of the owner who for reasons unknown to himself or others picks an entirely random part of his vehicle, of which he has little experience, to fret and fiddle about with. Having duly fretted and fiddled about to then consult with fellow owners some of whom have great knowledge who are often able to calm and soothe his furrowed brow. However the peace does not last long before doubt creeps back only to allayed by the choosing of an entirely unassociated vehicular part or system lest that part or system too may or may not be functioning properly. Thus the cycle goes on ad infinitum. Steve.

damn and blast.....does someone else have the same name as me?

funny thing is I've occasionally acted in a similar way.......

but not anymore......I just need to keep my eye on the clutch switch and hand brake Wink

other than that - roof rack, final fitting of subwoofer, aux outlet, some more dynamat, inverter and drl bumper.

and in my dreams some new wheels, tyres and big mf AP brakes.

It's only a question of time, and if past experience is anything to go by it won't be long......

Tick tock tick tock tick tick tock tick tock tock .....something isn't right, oh the worry, the worry!!!!

Have you swept the insides of the exhaust yet - you just know it makes sense Rolling with laughter
