leak between gearbox and transfer box - oil straming out
Just finished putting my gearbox and transfer box in after doing a clutch change and have a stream of oil coming out. I assume i have snagged a seal when putting them back together or something, but before i start ripping it all out again is there any plug or anything that should be in the hole in the photo? I think its gearbox oil from the feel (hayfever means I cant smell anything right now). I replaced the seals between the transfer box and gar box when they were out.

Or any suggestions on what it could be? Please someone tell me it's a blocked breather and a couple of sharp taps with a hammer is all it needs (can only hope Rolling with laughter )

Only leaks when the engine is running takes about 20 seconds to turn into a continuous stream of oil as can be seen in the last pic. Haven't moved it anywhere yet....

That's the oil seal in the transfer box unfortunately.

Only way to cure it is to remove and replace. PITA isn't it!

Yup, I agree. I suspect the seal may have been damaged when re-assembled. most likely by hanging the transfer box on the output shaft while you have a breather or even just nudging it when it was aligned.

Thanks for the replies, pulled them apart tonight, cant see what one has been leaking. Big Cry

Only thing was when i removed the lower bolt (next to the hole it was leaking from), loads of oil came out where the bolt was, at least a liter or so. Is that normal? I drained it before i removed it last time. Is it possible it is oil being forced down the thread of the bolt?

Planning on starting it tomorrow to see if it leaks from the gearbox seal, have the transfer box on threaded rod so should be easy enough to draw it back on for a bit of testing....

Yes oil should come out of the bottom hole on the front of the box as this is directly into the oil cavity. My money is on the input seal. However I've used rtv professionally for years and the only white stuff I've come across is household silicone, which isn't really up to the job.

Thanks for that, ordered new seals last night, should be here tomorrow, so will swap them over and hope for the best.

those are dry joints so you don't need any sealer on them

one or more (cant remember ) of the bolts are not blind so oil can leak round the thread so small bit of thread sealer or mid Loctite to seal threads

in the second to last pic there is a black bit in about the 8 oclock postion is that just a lump of cr@p or a hole in casing

I would give the both surfaces a good wire brushing and clean up and even a sandpaper rub to remove any old sealer and surface corrosion ( you don't want a lump of old sealer under the joint when refitting

you can if you wish use sealer on the joints it does stop corrosion in the joint but not necessary as you have oil seals on bothsides

I would not use the white stuff again looking how its broke up to small lumps ,if one of those bits get in a seal it will leak use a good silicone sealer like wynns rtv or Loctite rtv or any proper gasket rtv

Whilst the transfer box is off, run the engine in gear. You will see the output shaft of the gearbox spinning and will show whether this is what is leaking, as you say it appears pretty quickly.
