Yep, if it's a genuine CSW with the 'airbag' wheel it's 36 spline. 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

I was under the impression it could be either, but I also have a 2004 53 plate 110 csw and that is 36 spline

Best and probably only way to know for sure is to count them. I believe LR had a habit of fitting what ever was to hand at this time, my 2003 td5 county hardtop has 48...

I looked into this a while ago. Any td5 vehicle that was originally based on a Station Wagon platform (this includes the utility wagon but stragely not the double cab pick up) will have the 36 spline column. The 36 spline td5 wheel is the 'airbag' type one. All td5 utility vehicles have the 48 spline column (including dcpu) and have the soft type two spoke wheel with the big oval LR badge in the centre.
The confusion comes with the introduction of the tdci vehicles as an 'airbag' style wheel with 48 splines appeared. Hope that helps, Steve |

I have spoken to people who sell steering wheels and as far as Defenders are concerned there is no rhyme or reason to number of splines in the steering boss.
Simple answer is either to count splines or take a measurement IIRC 17mm = 36 splines 19mm = 48 splines. Some companies sell steering wheels with two bosses and you get a refund on one boss when you return it. So best advice is to either count/measure the steering column Alternative is get both bosses with an agreed refund on the one you do not need. Brendan |

As rallysteve says above - the whole steering wheel splines issue has a reputation as a complete dark art, but it actually isn't. If it's the 'two spoke' wheel as fitted to utility Defenders (lower specs) it's 48 spline. If it's the 'airbag' type on a Td5, it's 36 spline. The problem arises with early Pumas (2007 vintage) where they switched over to a 48 spline column for the 'airbag' wheel as well, but used up the remaining 36's first. So that period with the 'airbag' type wheel could be either and you have to check. But for any other vintage you can be sure what you've got just by the steering wheel. For reference - all Pumas after 2007-2008 are 48 spline whether they're 'two-spoke' or 'airbag' wheel. 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

Has it got the 4 spoke steering wheel with square boss? If so, it's 36. 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green
