110 For sale, scam or not?

I've been emailing back and forth about a beautiful 85 110 and I'm starting to get the feeling it's a scam.

The price is in line with what 110s of this year are selling for but it looks almost new. The problem is that the seller is being very vague about certain things. I was initially told the truck is in France but when I asked for things like an actual picture of the VIN, all of a sudden I'm told the truck is in Malta, already loaded on a container waiting to be shipped.

I asked what shipping company and she's hasn't answered, I got this response:

The successful conclusion of this transaction will be safeguarded by the shipping company through their Safe Exchange Policy. Alter Transport & Logistics has the appropriate security measures to prevent and avoid any element of risk that may arise in our transaction. They basically acts as a trustee between the buyer and seller.

As I previously mentioned, there is a 10-day inspection period which begins once the car arrives at your location. In addition to the provided inspection period, Alter Transport & Logistics will handle everything on our behalf, ( including: transfer of the documents from the buyer to the seller, customs procedures, payment, transportation, etc...)

If you agree to the above-mentioned terms, please email me back with the following information:
- Your Full Name and Complete Delivery Address - Info. required, by the shipping company in order to draft the purchase agreement, in accordance with the EU legislation
- Your Phone Number: (Home, Mobile, Office) - Info. required for transportation purposes, the shipping company dispatcher will call to establish a delivery time frame at your location.

Hope to hear from you soon, to get things rolling.
Sincerely,
Patricia

Its on half a dozen web site prices vary at $4500, 4500 euros up to $51000,the shipping company appears to do nothing more than shift barges inland (USA). Not to mention the typical Chinese style advert. Seems legit,go for it! Awesome first post btw Thumbs Up . Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

Scam, this sentence has Nigeria written all over it:

Simple googling Alter Transport & Logistics shows that there is no company by such name, however:

There are three transport companies that have Alter in their name:

1. Alter Logistics http://www.alterbarge.com/
This indeed is a USA Mississippi river barge company. Kevin could easily give them a call from Denver, but I think I know the answer already

2. Alter-Trans Transport Company. Located in Chisinau, Moldova. Shocked Don't think it is these guys either.

3. Alter Ego Groupe Transports Logistique. Well, they are located in France, so maybe contact them by e-mail to ask if they are aware of this Defender for sale and are taking up an intermediate role between seller and buyer. Kevin could forward them e-mails from the seller in which they refer to this Alter Transport & Logistics, and see what they say.

But afraid I know the answer already. Good luck, but be careful Thumbs Up
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

You should put a Scam vs No Scam poll on the post!

I vote scam.

I bet if you send a load more info (name / address etc) a request for a smallish, perhaps even reasonable downpayment or deposit / act of good faith will come next. A few days later, some problems in port that need a facilitation payment that needs covering etc. If you're unsure now, imagine how you'll start to feel then...

Hi Kevin,

It's definitely a scam, although the best written one I've seen for a while. Telltales are in the photo's:
Wolf Rims - but the photo shows cheaper non LR steel wheels
New rear cross member which is unsurprising given the age however the gearbox cross member looks almost new, and not something that's been under a Defender for nearly 20 years Wink

If you like, string them along a bit for wasting your time.

Also, be cautious about Defenders coming with lots of new bits. US customs are wise to Defenders now and take a dim view of them turning up with lots of shiny bits on them Thumbs Up

Good luck in your hunt.
