The switch which operates the light is itself operated by the spring-loaded selector fork for the dog clutch on the difflock.
When you move the lever, the linkage compresses a spring which will, if the the difflock dog clutch splines are aligned with those on the diff, engage the lock and the light will come on. If however the splines are not aligned, the spring will compress without moving the dog clutch until transmission movement occurs to cause the splines to align, and then the difflock will engage and the light will come on. So there may be a delay between operating the lever and the light coming on. Similarly when disengaging there may be a delay if there is a load on the splines (transmission wind-up or driving forces) preventing the disengagement spring from moving the dog clutch. The important feature, and the reason why this is how it is, is that the light actually indicates the state of the difflock and not the position of the operating linkage. |
