Hello everyone,
I have fixed a military type steel snorkel sometime ago for my SW 110 puma. I just want to check the snorkel is 100% air leak free before i do some wading. I blocked the top raised air intake pipe by using my palm to check whether the engine stalls but never, just end up with MIL light on the dash. In my 300tdi, the engine used to stall but not in my puma. Does puma engine suppose to stall when you block the snorkel? Cheers. Kind regards, Diluk |

Not sure I'd want to use my hand for that.
Check the airbox - several versions have drain holes that need sealing and some versions have rubber feet/locating lugs that fit quite loosly in holes made through the plastic base of the airbox. Also look at the quality of the seal made between the airbox lid and base. On some versions you can put a length of o ring rubber in or run a bead of waterproof grease. After that look at the joints between the flexible hoses and maybe nip up any jubilee clips. Oh and remember: Click image to enlarge Last edited by Supacat on 4th Jun 2014 2:40pm. I used to test my Td5 one by putting a plastic bag over the top of the snork. This stalked the engine. But I have heard that the inner wing section can suck its self flat damaging it. You can also test it by spraying easy start or carb cleaner on a the joints whilst the engine is running, if you have a leak the engine revs will rise.
They are many drain points on the Tdci air in take system. Andy |

For gods sake don`t cover the intake with anything.
This is what I was told as an apprentice DON`T PUT YOUR HAND OR YOUR FINGER IN OR ON ANYTHING YOU WOULD`ENT PUT YOUR COCK IN OR ON !!!! That has night opened my eyes ! Now back to the point, Go down to your local plumbers merchant buy your self a plumbers / gas fitters smoke bomb ( you know the one they use to check your fires flu is flowing ok) prepair your snorkel seal one end. Place the bomb in what ever you find is safe to do so, or direct it`s smoke, as much as poss into the snorkel seal the other end. If the smoke can`t escape logic dictates the water can`t get in. I use this method at work to check induction circuits for leaks so far so good... Never tryied it with a snorkel, Hope this helps. Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires. |

That sounds like a good idea & certainly any leaks it shows need sealing. However, stopping smoke under atmospheric pressure escaping may not show up all the issues of a weight of water trying to get in.
You may get strange looks though if you take the whole assembly to the local swimming pool & try submerging it But you could try dunking it in a wheelie bin full of water. |

would think about any way to detach the air pipe from the air filter. Then you have a tube-system with two open ends - engine side and snorkeltop side. Only problem is the big diameter. Maybe some funnel and lopts of tape could help here. One could extend one side with a clear pipe into a bucket with water. Then blow air from the other side so that it can be seen through the clear pipe that water is pushed out of that. If one manages to air tight shut the hose at the end where you blowed in .. you could easily watch what the water in the clear pipe does. If it doesn´t move, then everything is tight (even the funnels etc.), if it moves back into the pipe, there´s a leak.
