I drive a transit connect t200 all week. It's been a fantastic van on the whole and it's got a few miles under its belt now. Looked at a caddy and combo aswell as the connect but didn't like them. New fiesta van is lovely just abit small but then if that's all you need would fit the bill perfect. 2001 TD5 110 County Station Wagon - sold

I had a Peugeot Bipper (same as the Citroen Nemo and Fiat something), pretty good. Drives just like a car, has a few comforts like air-con, electric windows. Traded it in for the Defender for not much money at all, they don't go for much. I'd get another if I needed a small van.

Astra van. Legendary. Will be selling mine soon actually, just to get a newer one. Had loads, never any trouble, 50-60mpg on a run and a great drive. You can get a five seater version too. V8 90...WIP

My dad's recently hired a Fiesta for a long motorway run as it was the only thing available at short notice and his car was broken. It was one of the very eco-friendly ones and he thought it was going to be rubbish but rang me up to tell me how good it was.
We've got an old style ('04) Astra van at work and it's great. Even with a heavy right foot you get over 60MPG, I've had over 700 miles on a tank etc etc. It's driven off road fairly regularly and nothing major's fallen off it! It's basic, but does the job and is remarkably quick. There's a guy that visits the farm regularly that has the newer Astra van, replacing one like we have. Reckons it isn't a patch on the older one, worse perform and fuel economy. I've driven the current generation Corsas, a 1.3 diesel and a 1.2 petrol. The diesel is OK, good fuel economy and reasonably performance. I don't like driving it though, the mirrors are terrible and it's fat and bulbous. The 1.2 petrol was truly awful, no performance even if you tried to thrash it, bad fuel economy whatever you did - thrashed would get about 32MPG, going easy on it I'd get maybe 35 and that was with a lot of motorway driving. To sum up, I have no experience of the current Fiesta personally, the current Vauxhalls are crap, the older Astra is good. |

Not sure if you are contemplating brand new but this is just hitting the showrooms and promises to be quite good ,with strong residuals penciled in by the major funders. Bipper , Nemo and Fiorino are a good little van and can be found quite cheaply but they will only get cheaper whilst you own it , I personally I think the Fiesta van is overpriced for what it is although it is a capable car derived van. |

I would like to bang the drum so to speak, for our little fiat vans.
Ok so the build quality may not be as good, the resale value will be less. You might get more toys for your cash. Make sure the oil`s been done to spec on the 1.3 diesel, I think it`s in the citroen and pug to iifc. The Vauxhall range has the same engine and gearbox (apart from the 1.7 Isuzu) due to the failed merger of 10 years ago, I used to work for a local Vauxhall dealer, keep clear of the 1.9 vivaro the gearbox is rubbish, they put a better one in with the later 2.0 ltr engine apprerantly it`s good on fuel I know your not after a bigger van but it might help someone Have you looked at your local Van Monster dealer, this is north gate leasing`s resale arm. We do a lot of there prep work at work they have a 48 hours exchange policy, and a reasonable warranty. Everything seems to get a full mot and if needed a cam belt, for some reason every caddy we do a cambelt on we put a water pump on them as well. In the range your looking at it`s much of a muchness, we do a lot of caddys they `er not bad the connect is a good van, a bit old yes but they do the miles. I would always have a soft spot for the combo, or any Vauxhall for that matter. Don`t get an ex post office van unless there`s a new engine and box in there, or it`s very cheap. Best of luck with your search Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires. |

Thanks for the replies everyone!
No, I'm really not going into mobile hairdressing
1.4, or a 1.6 in the 'Sportier' version! Paulv8/cupboard- We already run an Astra Van at the workshop (55 plate), and it is truly fantastic! Although, fiding one now with low mileage in good condition could be a bit tricky, and ideally I was as low a mileage as possible. An engine to TDi for! Well the 1.4 promises 69mpg, which although will probably never be achieved, sounds good! An engine to TDi for!

56 - 58 I'd say then in real figures. Defenders are thirsty beasts.

Another vote for an Astra van from me Fantastic things and a useable size for a small van, second for me would be a transit connect, they all seem very good at work but are maintained to a very high standard, but seem a bit more proper van like. Defender puma dormobile camper
