Most probable cause would be the light switch breaking up internally. With the ignition switch off you wouldn't get headlights to come on anyway even if it is working properly, i.e. if you stop the engine with all the lights on when you turn the key off you are left only with the sidelights. If you turn the key to position II then all the lights are on even if the light switch is in the sidelights only position? Pretty much points to the weak link.......the light switch, easily replaced.

It's a system called 'Dim-Dip' - it doesn't allow you to drive with just the sidelights on.

With sidelights selected on the main lighting switch, once the engine starts, it powers the dipped beams on a reduced power.

It's a system that Land Rover put in place to meet an EU lighting regulation that never was.

It's not a legal requirement, or an MoT testable item - there's lots of info on here and other forums, on how to disable or by-pass it.

On a TD5 of your age, Dim-Dip will be implemented using a Pink relay behind the instrument cluster, and a large resistor mounted to the RH inner wing.

I believe there is a resistor in the wiring that gives a very limited amount of current to the headlights with position 1. That resistor might have failed and is just giving full current to the headlights.. it is disabled via relay when you take the key out which is why only the sidelights stay on.

It is located under the inner wing so bonnet up!

You can disconnect it to disable headlights on position 1 but check that position 2 still works Thumbs Up

Absolutely no point in keeping it..

edit: what PaulMc said!

Ah, you didn't say that the headlights were on but at a reduced brightness with the engine on, if the headlights are at full brightness and you don't have dim dip fitted, not all do, then my previous statement is a likely cause.

I think the ultra dim dip with position 1 and the resistor is barley noticeable until the resistor fails and lets out full current.

With my old L322, when the blower motor resistor failed, the fan came on at full power which is why it appears the headlights are properly coming on Surprised

I recently disconnected my dim dip, lift bonnet, tucked under O/S, wing near brake M/C, I didn't know I had it till it started playing up. Eventually only had dip beam, couldn't only have the side lights on.Some people rewire the relay, dont know why if you can just unplug the resistor?? Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.
