Started to shudder and a loss of power
Pretty much as it says above. Took the family down into deepest darkest Cornwall to camp for a wedding weekend. On the trip back to Plymouth, (about 45 miles) the vehicle starter to shudder.

Coincidentally it had a loss of power and wouldn't pull anywhere near as normal. A brief stop and a check under the bonnet & levels indicated nothing out of the norm. Upon pulling away, the symptoms had elevated, but returned approximately 5 minutes into the trip and stayed with us all the way back.

Its not the first time its happened, but I initially thought it was just a phase, as it hasn't happened in the last month, and during that time it had towed a full trailer up country. But it now appears to be a permanent problem.

Anyone got an idea of what is going on. This summers holijour to France is looming and The Landy in essential to the whole trip.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

First things to do is unplug your MAF sensor and give it a whirl, sounds like something similar to what ii had next check the red plug on the ECU for oil ingress..

+1 for the MAF sensor. When it gives faulty readings the engine will go into reduce performance mode, hence the lack of power. Turning the ignition off and back gets you back into normal mode until the next faulty reading.

You can run a test by putting a voltmeter between the middle pin and ground when engine on but idle. It should read 2v, if it's off by more than ~0.3v I'd chuck it..

Flatdog are selling MAFs at £39 at the moment. Thumbs Up

Whilst your under the bonnet, spray some WD40 on the Turbo Waste gate actuator where the rod comes out, should help prevent it from seizing up in the future. Thumbs Up

Agree with above advice, MAF faults can bring varied symptoms. In my experience, a lack of power (like no turbo) until certain revs then it will pick up. Or on hills having to change down a gear to keep going!!

A shudder and loss of power - like hitting a rev limiter or governor - would be the wastegate actuator sticking. There is a great video on youtube put up by one of the tuning sponsors showing how simple it is to test.

Re the MAF on flatdog, is it genuine parts? Good for that money if it is. Always recommend fitting a genuine Siemens VDO part. Others just don't last.

Just my tuppence worth.

Hi THF, I had very similar symptoms in my td5 90. Thanks to the information I read on defender2.net I replaced my maf with a genuine one from duckworths. Problem solved in less than 5 minutes
