does it struggle to turn over like flat battery or do nothing at all?

It could well be that the capacitive capability (the ability to hold a charge) of your battery is knackered. All other indications would be normal except for the fact it won't turn the engine over. Unless you have a battery load tester to apply the load three times the rated maximum capacity of your battery (about 200 amps I think) to test your battery and it starts on a jump I think it best to shop for a new one perhaps? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

for high discharge test you need a carbon pile tester I got one goes up to 500 amps
a good garage should have a desent load tester ,may test it for you for a drink |

I have a very good load tester. I even compared it to my Land Cruisers battery that is 100% and it had the same results.

Just plain dead....the dash lights all come on and sometimes there is a clic clic clic sound like when your starter is ...but this can be canceled out as it starts up first time with the jumper leeds. |

does sound like battery if when you jump it its ok , what amp does your tester go up to ?
do you put jump leads direct to battery on defender ? |

I do connect straight to battery to jump.......is this a issue?

no not a issue , just if you jumped to a jump point or say to winch cables etc you are bypassing the mega fuse on the battery , just thought maybe bad connection on battery , are the lead tight on the terminals and fuse ?
I have seen relays that are very voltage sensitive and slight drop in voltage of fitted battery causes them to drop out causing none start but spin over ok but not as good as they should , jump them and they start fine but battery seems ok maybe your starter solenoid is bit voltage sensitive or dusty inside the starters are not that strong if voltage down they don't like it , seen hundreds of transit starters burnt out what is charge voltage ? |

My guess (without seeing it) is You've got a bad connection probably on the starter or even inside the starter.
I think its unlikely its a battery issue, as in not holding charge or not being charged because you said in your first post "its random" Your battery voltage will be lower than that of jump charge. Your jump start could be up to 2 volts more, enough to pass the hight resistance in the poor connection perhaps? The next time it wont start, i would have the DVM on there and check the battery voltage and down at the starter too and see whats happening with either battery or starter. Please post your findings as this may help one of us later. All the best with it Lee |

Make sure when you do try it that the connections on the battery posts are nice and tight too.
I know from my own experience that you can think your battery is near flat yet it's poor physical connection instead. Hence the click on ignition. |
