Steve, all,
Now that we are on this subject, after 5 years I am planning to replace my original LR (Varta) battery this fall when the truck is due for its maintenance. Will ask Autobritt to do this. Which battery should I go for, keeping just the single battery set up? (I have no real power guzzling accessories). I have read a lot of good about Odyssey, but want to make sure that 1. it is a sufficiently powerful version, and 2. it is a direct fit, so LxWXH are withing the standard limits. Would this be the Odyssey PC 1350 then? Or another version better? Tks, Eric You never actually own a Defender. This has the dimensions for you
http://www.optimabattery.co.uk/images/ryellowopdata.gif http://www.optimabattery.co.uk/images/ryellowopdata.gif So should be 238 or 195 or 191 mm, depending on model. But you can lay them on their side if that makes the space easier. Andy |

Well, our original Vartas don't even offer 4 years warranty of course, but while I know that I do mostly relatively short distances (around 10km), I have noticed that when I turn on the contact without the engine running, my Speaker LED headlamps are flickering when then turned on with battery power alone. That must mean that the voltage at rest is under 12V, so thought that the original Varta starts tp show some signs of weakness..... Don't have to do anything in a rush however, because I have the famous plug 12S installed, which allows me to easily connect a Ctek charger for topping battery up without even having to open the door. The twin Odyssey will fit or twin Optima's will fit. I currently have a red top and a yellow top with no problems
But prefer the Odyssey setup. 2007 TD5 90 Hard Top |

Twin Optima yellow tops used to be fitted in the red 110. Now running twin Odyssey 1700's. A tight fit but doable.
Black 110 running on twin Odyssey 1500's reasonable amount of space. Our now ex Disco 2 was Odyssey 1500 White 90 still on standard LR battery. When time comes to change it will be Odyssey in there as well. You could say I prefer Odyssey over other makes Brendan |

As to Odyssey, for a single battery replacement set-up, would the PC1350 not be the best choice?
Seems more powerful at nominal capacity 95Ah than the PC1500 and PC1700 which are both 68Ah. Also at 190 mm height the PC1350 is marginally lower than those other two. No doubt the Odyssey PC1350 would be more expensive than a new standard LR (i.e. Varta 90Ah) battery, so would the extra money be worth it? Below is link where I got those Odyssey details. http://www.odysseybattery.com/battspecs.html You never actually own a Defender. I have a C Tek charger & am aware of the "plug" system available with these units. However, being new to Defenders, I'm not aware of the "famous 12s plug" to which you refer, or where it would be fitted etc on a defender. So, could you please explain, or have images of it etc? Thanks, Pickles. |

I think the above poster is refering to having a 12S socket fitted at the rear, we use them here to provide extra electrics to caravans(usually) The standard 12N socket has 7 pins which are the standard towing trailer socket enabling the trailer running lights, indicators, fog light and brake lights. The 12S, also with 7 pins though in a different configuration, has at least one permanent live which is where the connection for the c-tek is connected to, earth pins, reversing light feed, a heavier amperage power feed with the engine running sorted with a smart relay which if you're a tin tenter provides power for the 12v part of the caravan fridge and can charge onboard batteries. This is why you'll see two trailer electric sockets at the back of cars with tow bars. There is a move towards a 13pin single socket to help simplify things plus they have a locking mechanism to reduce the risk of the plugs pulling out whilst travelling. Hope that helps explain things.

CTEKs have a gadget so you can charge through a "hot" accessory socket.
As the OE one is "cold" i.e. turned off when the ignition is switched off, I've had a couple "hot" ones fitted & use the charger that way. Better on a wet day.
