Chequer plate wingtops - fit with gasket or not?
Hi, I have had a quick search through old posts but....... I have 3 mm Black chequer plate to fit on my wings, I have no gaskets with them, I can make some out of some foam but is it best without? If you fit foam under the chequer plate are you not allowing moisture to be there longer? Do they squeak if gaskets are not used?

I hate rivnuts so got Black painted aluminum rivets to use. If they ever have to be removed I can just drill the rivets out and re-fit with new ones anyway. 110 Hardtop

I fitted mine without the foam and they have been fine. have you thought of fitting the plates with stainless steel fasteners with countersunk heads in my opinion they look so much neater, you could paint the tops of the fasteners black.

Go to a garden centre that provides a marine service like Maidenhead Aqautics and buy a metre or so of butyl pondliner. This makes an absolute ideal gasket. My chequer plate is fitted with gaskets all of them supplied by the relevant suppliers. On everything else I have used pondliner to great effect.

What gaskets or chequerplate? If done correctly with gasket and wet assembly of the fasteners your comment is 'rot' in itself! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Ok fitted with pond liner under it. I also put grease in the holes prior to rivetting. Thanks for the advice much appreciated. 110 Hardtop

Just out of interest and I hope not sounding to daft but what does the foam actually do and what is 'wet assembly'

I hate tread plate, but if I was fitting it I would paint both surfaces in waxoyl - if you have seen the mess after tread plate is removed the reasons why are humblingly honest

I never noticed any issues when fitted 2004 TD5 Defender 90 xs station wagon

Gaskets when compressed will prevent the ingress of dirt and moisture and prevent the possibility of corrosion and abrasion. Wet assembly is when you fit a fastener it is smothered in sealant or an anti corrosion medium, the excess is wiped away after tightening. This can give an effective seal and prevent the onset of dissimilar metal corrosion through the electrolytic interaction of two different metals when wet. You did ask!
