I was amazed at the 'dirt gasket' behind it and used a wallpaper scraper to remove the initial build up. I used butyl pondliner I had left over to make some gaskets before refitting. The bonnet I used the gaskets supplied and sealed up using black Sikaflex on the rest.

What gaskets or chequerplate? If done correctly with gasket and wet assembly of the fasteners your comment is 'rot' in itself!

Gaskets when compressed will prevent the ingress of dirt and moisture and prevent the possibility of corrosion and abrasion. Wet assembly is when you fit a fastener it is smothered in sealant or an anti corrosion medium, the excess is wiped away after tightening. This can give an effective seal and prevent the onset of dissimilar metal corrosion through the electrolytic interaction of two different metals when wet. You did ask!
