Panic at sudden power loss

Last night whilst driving home on M56, my 1997 300tdi Defender 110 suddenly lost all power, the "Main beam" indicating light came on the dashboard and the radio went off.

I signaled to pull on to the hard shoulder, dropped down a gear and it came back to life. The radio had lost all it's memory. This happened two more times, but I switched the headlights to sidelights only and it never happened again.

I've had the defender for about 9 months and this has happened before about 2 months ago, but in a torrential downpour when I've had the wipers and headlights on together. The only commonality between last night and the previous occurrence was having the head lights on.

The Defender has had a Kenlowe fan fitted by a previous owner and I fitted the radio, other than that I think it's standard. The PO told me that a thief has tried to steal the car in the past and wrecked the steering column but he had the electrics replaced. The indicator stalk feels a bit "wobbly" but seems to function ok, and the wiper stalk feels good and precise.

Any ideas? Getting there slowly is far better than not getting there fast

Check battery terminals and main earth connection.
