4-6 years I would say on previous experience. If 'worked hard' battery life will be reduced as the capacitance capability reduces and sludge/silt can build up in the bottom that can eventually short out a cell or two. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!
Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

Looks like the 'newer' models are more battery sensitive then the old ones. When my D3 didn't want to start on his old battery (5 years old) I tried it im my 90 td5 didn't start either. A few weeks later I tried it in an 1984 90 diesel and it started straight. Without charging in between.
Even after fully recharging and standing overnight it could not start my td5 but could start the old 90. Roel 1984 90 2.5 na Diesel - RR V8 (1994-2001) 1997 Camel Trophy Discovery 300TDI (2001-2009) 2005 G4 Discovery III 4.4 V8 (2008-2018) It's gone but it still hurts. 2003 90 Td5 (2009-now) |

Newer models are definitely more sensitive. Notice (as per earlier post) that voltage considerably drops as soon as I turn on the Tdci ignition. Never noticed this on my Td5, but thought was what Tdci's did. Yesterday decided just to operate the winch without engine running, and no load on, but battery lasted only a couple of mins. So think it's the batteries.
Any one got deals on oddesey batteries running? Andy |

I assume its coz there is so much more to power up on newer vehicles before you even start the engine, plus engines are higher compression with much tighter tolerances. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

Lots of factors affect battery life.
Have a look at www.ctek.com, they have some clever technology to recharge and maintain battery life. I purchased one of their chargers for the father in law, he was well impressed. My original (Delphi) Disco 2 Td5 battery lasted 10 years and 190k miles.
My Puma Defender battery (also Delphi and I think identical to the Disco) is now at 7 years and 142k miles, and occasionally gives signs of old age - very occasionally it is reluctant to crank. The Puma engine support systems definitely seem to draw significantly more power from the battery prior to cranking than the TD5. |

My battery is still doing its job, as it's starting the engine every time. But it's only since fitting the battery monitor that I noticed this drop in power. So with out monitor I would have said my batteries were good. They are probably six or so years old and have done their job well in all situations, so can't complain. Just not that happy in parting with £500.

That's two of us! I do not know how i managed without my CTEK charger, it does what it says and has brought two of my old batteries back to life. I do not know what is in that little box but it performs magic. |

Same here, 5.5 years old original battery. Even when the truck sits idle for a week or so, before starting it again, my battery tester will still show a charge of 12.5V You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

Mine will still show 12.5 volts. But then I turn on the ignition and down it goes.

Got some good advice on looking after the new ones so hope they will last longer. Andy |
