Brake Vacuum Pump
There has been a lot of speculation about this weak part on Pumas. Since all the old posts, has there been a definitive answer found as to which ones are good and which aren't up to the job?

Ours blew up yesterday (after 36,000 mls) with 2 months of our warranty left and I'm keen to ensure that the replacement will last.

There has been talk of a revised double sealed BVP but then I think fekete said his broke.

Can anyone shed any up-to-date light on the subject?

I believe the replacement it is the definitive part. Anyway warranty should last at least another 3 years on any replaced part. I would more worried about the clutch assy. Puma 110" SW

the latest pump version 3 I think it is does have the double seal fitted 2.4 90 XS

true, a typical example being,a battary fitted two days before the warranty runs out so does the battary 2.4 90 XS

My vacuum pump is currently being replaced under warranty (2 years 24000miles covered), I noticed oil splatter on the right hand side of the underside of by bonnet, also fine drops on the rear of my vehicle (so I knew something was on it's way out). It is indeed a known issue as voiced by the deputy service manager at my dealers, who knew straight away what it was. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

I don't know and truth be told (quick glance at my Giveaf**kommeter application...No it didn't even twitch) don't really care...It was silver before it became contaminated with oil and dust, had a manufacturers label on it which was silver and black (there ended my interest) and obviously had one foot in the grave the other on a banana skin, and, hopefully.....will be shiny and new looking when I collect the vehicle where it's been replaced! I even expect them to clean the inside of my bonnet!

I hope to take my Puma to the top end of Australia next year, hope the insurence doesn't mind me walking away from my truck thats run out of oil because the vacum pump spat all its oil out. Maybe I should take the wifes TD5 instead

I wouldn't worry about it unduly. The oil doesn't p155 out but seep, it was the belt that threw it on my bonnet and the wind that caught the particles and put it on the rear of my vehicle. Oil level loss was nowt worth worrying about!

I doubt all pumps went bang due to failure on the pulley O-seal. It is worth to check the tightness of those 2 bolts and stud attaching it to the mount. Puma 110" SW

Sory to see your issues with the Puma stating to get you down Allan. I suppose we all have a "line in the sand" point beyond which we are not prepared to go or in other words when our patience runs out! From what I have seen on this site and on the Australian site a brake vacuum pump that starts to leak oil can be replaced easily enough. Me, I have not done it but I can see no reason as to why your dealer should not be willing to show you how it should be done should you wiss to carry a spare just incase. I know in an ideal world we should not have to do these things but should you wish to go it might be that little thing at the back of your mind that gives you peace of mind to allow you to complete your journey with ease and confidence.
I am aware that this is not your only issue that is concerning you with the Puma. Hopefully you will have all your issues sorted for you to allow you to take pleasure in the Puma. To my mind having a Puma in AUSTRALIA and to time to use it to explore AUSTRALIA must be one of the greatest combinations you could possibly wish for!
I think that a lot of the disappointments caused by the Puma is down to dealer ignorance or down right ineptitude. The sooner the better the independents get to grips with our Pumas the sooner these problems will be sorted.Good luck with your trip no matter how you do it. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Just as an add on to the above post. Yesterday in my work van the serpentine belt decided to shred. Got it pulled over in time before too much had left itself in the engine bay. Before Christmas the diesel pump died and left me stranded. Not a Land Rover and still under three years old. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

The rule is 3 year warranty of the car OR 12 months. so if you have it fitted at 2yrs 10 months you will have until 3yrs and 10 months.

Re., the 12 month warranty, be aware that it is the repair that carries the warranty, not the part.

I had a replacement steering box fitted to my TD5 Disco 2 when the original started weeping at 130k miles. Within two months the replacement - box 2 - had failed (due to shoddy assembly - the seals were visibly crooked) and this was replaced by box 3 under the warranty on the repair. However 11 months after box 3 was fitted it was leaking so badly that I would have to top up every 10 miles or so, much worse than the original box (which with hidsight I wish I had kept).

When I contacted my local dealer (with whom I have no complaint - they have always been very good to me) I was told that since the original repair was 13 months prior to the latest failure there was no warranty. They did suggest however that I contact LR customer services since they (the dealer) thought that a steering box should last longer than this. LR customer services didn't want to know. When pushed they agreed that it was unsatisfactory and suggested that I should make a claim under the Sale of Goods act since the box clearly was not of merchantable quality, however they took great delight in pointing out that any such claim is against the dealer who supplied the part and not the firm that supplied the part to the dealer. In effect, they were saying that they agreed that it was rubbish but that I should sue the dealer and not them!

At this point I bought a s/h original box from ebay which has worked satisfactorily far longer than any of the "genuine part" replacements from LR.

Subsequent enquiries suggest that the boxes (which are made by Adwest in Reading) are manufactured to a high standard originally, but ALL boxes supplied as spares by Land Rover are reconditioned not new - it is not possible to buy a genuinely new box from LR except when buying a complete vehicle. There are some series quality control issues with the rebuilding (which is NOT carried out by Adwest) but is probably the cheapest subcontractor that could be found. I will NEVER buy another steering box from LR if I can avoid it.
