Switched power source
Hi all,

As more and more gizmos are appearing in the cab of my 2010 puma sw I have decided to semi permanently wire in my various 5v and 12v devices. I spotted this on fleabay : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201083546942?ssP...1423.l2649 which should take care of the 5v kit, the 12v I shall take off the same point that is supplying the voltage converter.
My question is what is the best place to tap in to obtain a 12v ignition switched supply. I reckon the load will be no more that 5a max.

Cigrette lighter would be my choice, as it's separately fused (I think), so should things go wrong then only that circuit will be dead.

Yep cigarette lighter as jim said - its got a 20AMP fuse.

You can also get one of these like wot I did and connect at the fusebox

Yes, thats what I thought the cigarette lighter would be the best place, I've looked at the fuse box gizmo but I understand that you cannot close the fuse box after it's fitted?

I doubt you could, make a tap section between the original plug and socket.
That way noting gets cut, all you need is some spade terminals and solder on a T joint and heatshrink, or use a tap but heatshrink would be better.

Should you require a 5V feed for a sat navigation device such as a TomTom make sure you have a 5v fast blow fuse in line. TomTom circuit boards are incredibly voltage sensitive and should for some reason that 12V 24V 40V to 5V 4 USB Step Down USB piece of kit spike, which some do, it could blow the TomToms board.

Currently I have tapped into the wire directly for my reverse CAM and the dash cam
Was planning to use the piggy back fuse thing for the CB radio so not installed yet

Duh didn't think that the fuse box lid may not close.

Tried it just now - no problems in a Puma - fits fine and fuse box lid closes with plenty of clearance

Will be using this for the CB power source

Is it possible to use a Fuse Tap in the Fuse box under the Drivers Seat?

I need to power a 100amp relay from a switched live, if so which fuse, as it would be easier to wire it from there. NormanD WE191

I would be vary of tapping in for a 100amp feed as I can't imagine any circuit has that much of spare load.

Given its a relay, don't you just need to power the switch on the relay from the switched live and get the relay power from a fused cable direct from the battery?

Should be no problem tapping from under the drivers seat as relays switch doesn't use much power.

However, i would double check with some of the sparkys on here ( such as munch90 I believe)

Any clues as which fuse can be used? NormanD WE191

normal 30 amp relays only take a very small current (I think its about .3 of a amp on the switching side so really a feed just to switch relay can be taken from most fuses
not sure about heavy switching relays , but easy to check with multi meter

the feed to power something through relay I prefer to run from battery , run one heavier wire than needed for future gadgets (we all add more in time ) and saves having wires running off other things here there and everywhere

some relays have diode to protect the circuit from taking switching feed from , as relay coil field collapses it can sent a spike back up the feed wire and if you take a feed from some sensitive is not a good thing
