1970 Series 3
A mate is interested in this S3
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171316099114?ru=...26_rdc%3D1

Not knowing much about S3's. Apart from the wrong seats and possibly the wrong dash board (looks to me to be a later 90/110 one?)

Any thoughts? Price about right?? 1999 Defender TD5 110

Cheers BT.
So, is it a genuine Series 3 tax exempt?
The rear door is a split fold one, but the series 3's I have seen have a swing out door.
I tried doing a Car check in the DVLA website but it did not find any details of it. One website told me it was white (the old colour by the looks of the pictures before it was turned from a soft top to hardtop?) 1999 Defender TD5 110

Sounds like a typical mix and match Series. The colour is very wrong and does not suit it at all. Depends what your mate is after. If the bulkhead and chassis are sound then everything else is easy to do. I think 4.5k is overpriced to be honest.

It appears to be a bit of a hybrid of S2A and S3 parts, bulkhead dash heater appear to be S3 5 bearing engine was not in early S3s as far as I know.
But then it's bound to have been modified/ updated in the last 40 odd years. Has obviously had a lot of time and money thrown at it recently would probably make a good usable classic if you're not looking for originality. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Cheers for the info. I think really, my mate is after a tax exempt, classic insurance, MOT free motor(hopefully)
Certainly worth a HPI check as well. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Thats right, it started with a 3 bearing block. S3 gearbox was a better unit than the S2 having syncro.

This one will be tax exempt if 1970 but certainly will not be MoT exempt (would have to be at least 10 years older).

Looks like a mixture of S2A and S3 but that is quite common.

If you are not bothered by originality, buy on condition only.

My S2A is never going to be "correct" in every detail but I will never sell it. I repainted the exterior and the rear tub interior myself, learning as I went along. When I was parked next to a perfect example at Woburn a couple of years ago, although it was lovely, it was a "trailer queen" by the guy's own admission and I would have not wanted to drive it anywhere for fear of scratching it.

Not sure why folk go mad about tax exempt vehs to be honest, its not that expensive. It will still need an MOT unless it was made before 1960. There are more original ones out there for less money, you just need to look hard! I am on the hunt for a nice S2 at the moment.

Must be pre 1960 for MOT exemption ! The one you have mentioned should be tax free as manufactured before 1972 Thumbs Up

The split tailgate aka "the cat flap" was always an option on series motors and is very are these days. 2005 Td5 90 XS
