It could be a warn link gear shaft between the transfer box and main gear box. they are a female spline cup on the gearbox output shaft that takes a long male splined shaft to take the drive into the transfer box. they are prone to waring and in some cases can cause vibration.
Also check your prop shaft joints for play. Pete |

This sound familiar .. I get a vibration when moving but not under load. Ie not accelerating or deccelerating. Quite a harsh vibration.
Pete, is the link between the gearboxes easy to check and replace? Gearbox out job? Thanks 2008 Defender 110 XS SW - M57N2 / 6HP28X |

not main box but transfer box out , but to be honest I don't think the shaft would only make noise in 5th only

Thanks for the info Pete, also I have experienced vibration which seems to be coming from around transfer box area whilst moving slowly away, feels like when you change up into a higher gear by accident, once you gain speed it disapears?? Also not sure if this is anyway related, when switching ignition off, I get a loud clunk from same area quite a lot. Cheers Keith |
