they will stop quick when first turned
WITH ENGINE OFF spin the fan by hand for a while and it should get easier to spin to the point of it will keeping spinning for a short time when you let go of it that's why fans make a lot more noise when you first start up cold until they free up (normally go quiet after few seconds ) |

When cold it will spin with some resistance.
On start up it will spin right up to engine speed as the internals of the viscous coupling sort themselves out but after about 5-15 mins should sort itself out and become quite loose. Stop the engine and it should freely rotate if flicked. When the engine is up to running temperature it should click in and start working hard making a more wooshing air sound when you open the bonnet. Once up to temperature with the engine off it should be quite resistant to move and if flicked will probably rotate about 5-90 degrees if spun lightly. this means all is well. If however it spins freely when engine is at running temp, but turned off, means the viscous coupling has failed and a new unit must be sourced. Hope that helps |

You have to get them quite hot to have them kick in. Normal driving, especially in the winter months, doesn't manage to lock it up properly on mine.
Put a big trailer on though and it locks up nicely, makes a hell of a racket and really moves a serious amount of air! |
