Defender 130 Puma 2.2d - Battery issue? Or so it seemed...
Hi guys and gals,

First post (and first defender), so I apologise for any glaring newbie mistakes..

I've got a lovely 2011 Defender 110 with the newer 2.2d Puma engine. Totally love it!

It's been running perfectly until this morning it wouldn't open with the central locking key fob. The car was totally unresponsive. Censored .

I assumed I'd left the lights on, or on a recent trip with the back fully loaded something had switched the lights on which over a few days ran the battery flat. I'd not driven it for 5 days.

I picked up a mains car battery recharger from Halfords, took the battery out of the Defender, connected the lot and switched it on, only the recharger is saying the battery is fully charged and good to go.

Is there something else glaringly obvious that I'm missing that would make the car 100% dead apart from a flat battery?! I'm not sure where else to look other than assume this charger is up the spout. Could it be an immobiliser issue?! Gotta be the battery right?!

Hi Nick

When you say totally unresponsive do you mean just unlocking or would it not start as well ?

First thing I would do is change the battery in the key fob and resync it with the immobiliser - handbook will tell you how to do it. If you have the second fob then try that as that one may be OK - but if it is all OK and everything is back to normal change the battery in that one as well as that is probably on it's way out as well !

Thanks for the reply Bob.

Yeah the car was completely dead. No central locking, nothing turning the key, even the clock had stopped!!

I'm pretty sure it HAS to be the battery, but it's odd the mains charger isn't charging it. Must of totally killed the battery running it down for that long, or be a dicky charger.

Thanks for responding.

There is a mega fuse just off the battery + terminal. That may have gone but why I have no idea,

Other simple thing to try is a reset of the ECU. Disconnect the - (only) from the battery for a couple of minutes and then reconnect.

Also, may be worth tracing the earth back from the battery to the chassis and making sure it is grounded OK.

The clock should always work unless the battery is disconnected so it does point to a battery, main fuse or earth problem.

Might be worth crawling underneath and checking battery cables are intact and haven't been cut by an aborted theft attempt?

Then there is a megafuse adjacent to the battery in the positive feed.

Lastly IIRC there were a few occasions on older vehicles where the actual battery connections were iffy.

Good point Keith, some light fingered person may have been at work and been disturbed.
