I know one day I'd have something good to report.....
I'm not there yet but...... after enough trials and tribulations to last me a life time things seems to becoming good. I believe its still a little early days and there's still a few jobs to sort but I believe things seem to be running really well nearly all the time ![]() as I thought these tdci engines do actually seems like modern diesel engine (as indeed they are) not the post great war engine I thought had in advertantly been fitted. I'm no expert but I'm still convinced the occasional issues relate to egr sticking (I'm sure I've been told otherwise that know far more than I do), it would appear the engine has really started to loosen up over the last couple of weeks. It now seems that its actually possible to adjust engine speed to gears when changing up or down. I actually feel that 2000+ rpm is possible without things falling apart - and I believe this is the root of the problem. having had various issues along the way high revs for the most part seem to have been beyond reach and this 'in ability' to use any revs has caused things to get clogged / choked up with soot? this last tankful I've also put more 2so than usual c500ml in this tank. perhaps thats made a huge difference too? I can imagine it reducing engine noise but I wouldn't expect it to change the responsiveness of the engine which has hugely improved (as above I can actually adjust engine speed easily to get a smooth gear change). whatever it is I'm happy at the moment and hope it continues to improve (or at least hope things don't go down hill). perhaps its me and after 27k I've learnt how to drive......I've not even fitted the acoustic matting yet (or the new carpets, door seals, bonnet release or speakers) ! ![]() I hope everyone is enjoying theres. |

Please don't take offence, but if you treated the engine, as a modern diesel , rather than a tractor engine it might respond better. I rarely change gear in 1st or 2nd below 3000 revs, and get to my cruising speed ASAP. Yes, I had a transfer box blow on me but that has now been confirmed that the oil leak spotted by the dealer at service should have been dealt with then and there as the box basically ran dry, but the engine is fine, revs freely to 4000 easily, and although changing gear is different compared with a Eurobox it certainly is not clunky.Drive it like a Transit and not like a 60's tractor and enjoy it.
36,000 miles in 3 years and still enjoying every mile. ![]() ![]() Neighbourhood Watch for Land Rover Owners http://www.landywatch.co.uk/smf2/index.php |

point taken and certainly no offense taken.
the revs have been kept very low and I'm starting the think this have had alot to do with the various issues I've had and not the other way round......ie because the engine / car has sounded like something was due to fall to pieces I've felt like I've had to keep the revs right down.....this in turn has probably caused problems. historically I've only occasionally felt like I could go beyond 2k rpm in 1st (without it sounding like the engine was about to implode) but unfortunately I've constantly been told all is fine only then to have different componets fail and other problems found (transfer input shaft, x3 input shaft seals, new gear box, loose exhaust brakets and heat shield etc) now things are starting to work the revs are going up which I'm sure will only do more good. however I don't believe much more than 2250 rpm for 95% of the time is necessary (but thats only my opinion - its done no harm to any of my previous cars........and if I told you about my dads LR you wouldn't get your hat on). ![]() |

![]() As WG says, diesels need a bit of welly, they dont respond well to a light pedal. ![]() |

I appreciate you're comments, but don't forget the 2.4 Tdci is totally different to its predecessors. Not designed and built by Land Rover or its predecessors but by Ford for a totally different market and vehicle type. It's been adapted for the Defender, but underneath it all its a Ford diesel not a 200/300 tdi or a Td5.

you're right about the transit vans. but myself and many others sing the praises of 2so. I'm not suggesting the engine won't work without the stuff I just reckon it works better with it.....and on that basis alone I'm more than happy to spend the extra on it.

Guilty as charged. I use 2so with the local supermarket diesel and notice a difference. Don't use it with Gulf , BP or Shell as they seem OK without it. My local Indy does agrees.

![]() without going out and buying a new egr it would be great to know 100% if the egr has (and still a little) been one of the problems. perhaps I'll never know ![]() |
