Has anyone used wurth "rost off plus"
Looking to give my new x-member a nice coat of paint for permanent but as it's been about a month since it was installed there is a little bit of surface rust. So I'm going to wire brush and then treat it and was thinking this might be the product to use. http://www.wurth.co.uk/technical-chemicals...plus-300ml Also what would you all use for a primer. For the top coat I am thinking Hammerite, sprayed on. Primer preferably would be spray on as well Defender 90 XS TD5 (03 Reg) |

if its only surface rust try and get hold of a orbital sander or DA rub the xmember down to bare metal and then etch prime
 then a nice coat of paint over the top. Hammerite doesnt give the nicest of finish but it does protect the xmember very well got a 110 in at the minute which looks like its been done with hammerite and its very solid and is showing no signs of rust  CSK Automotive

agree with above rost off is like wd40 , no good to paint over

So rust converter for the bits i can't access with the wire brush attachment on the grinder.
Then etc prime. Then Hammerite? Any recommendations for the converter? Will Defender 90 XS TD5 (03 Reg) |

Rustoleum is another quality paint,I used it on mi chassis and rear x member last year, use a gloss roller rather than a brush for a better finish. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

Fertan one of the best used in the marine industry. Do a search on here or Google it.

I do like the look of the fertan stuff.
It's on the list What are suggestions as to how to remove what paint there is from the inaccessible areas before applying this stuff. There is obviously only so much you can access with a grinder? I was thinking some form of paint remover. Then the whole thing can get coats of fertan, etch primer and then paint Defender 90 XS TD5 (03 Reg) |

Wirebrush onna drill,but dont buy the cheap ones,I was pulling wire "splinters" outa mi arm fer days afterwards,a real thick washing up liquid solution and a 3M Scotchbrite (industrial type green/red scouring pad) for heavy duty cleaning, de-greasing,keying the paint and light rust removal.You can paint straight over the existing sound paint just get rid of as much of the loose rust as you can Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

I think that's all I need then.
Wirebrush on drill + Scotchbrite pad with washing up liquid to get all I can off. Then spray on the fertan and wait 48 hours for it to do it's stuff Rinse it all off with low pressure hose. Then spray on an etch primer. And lastly put on a top coat. Thanks chaps. I'll try and get come photos. May not be for a week or so as I think I'm going to pop the floor and drop the tank to do both sides. Will Defender 90 XS TD5 (03 Reg) |

I assume there shouldn't be a problem with applying Hammerite Direct to rust aerosol paints to an etch primer? Defender 90 XS TD5 (03 Reg)

Hi Waldo, When I did my rear crossmember I sprayed it with etch primer and the top coated with smoothrite gloss black got a great finish and still looks good a year later.
Received the side steps at work this afternoon Not unpacked them yet but I,m sure they,re all the judging by the weight. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Excellent, glad they arrived okay.
In that case i'll just slam hammerite over the etch primer. Need to do a long trip so I can train some fuel out to drop the tank. One of the best treatments I've found for rusty metal is POR15, it does all the stuff that Hammerite is claimed to do and more, it really does stick like $hit to a blanket.
