South Africa 2011 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 X-Tech LE Orkney Grey
Drive mine between 2500-3500 all the time.

I have a Freelander II auto 2.2td4 as well and although not really the same engine I've observed that during normal driving it rarely gear up before 2800-3000 rpm.

Generally change gears between 2000 and 2500 rpm. occassionally at 3000. Just completed a 4500 km trip through the Northern Cape Province, SE Namibia and down the west coast (South Africa for he uninformed!!). Camping all the way and loaded. About 3000km off tar and on bad gravel and sand tracks.
Overall consumption 9.6 l/100km.

I believe they are governed, as are all diesels. So revving it hard should not hurt it at all. And generally a labouring motor will break well before a non laboured motor.
I find changing under 2000rpm often makes the motor labour if it's not on a flat road, so I stick between 2500 and 3000 for most gears except 1st. Every now and then I make it scream at 4000 to loosen any carbon that shouldn't be hanging around.

I don't generally thrash it but like to change up when it's running smoothly at about 2000rpm. That of course can change if some turkey fancies burning me off in his old Tojo or Nisscan or whatever and the BAS remap comes into it's own in 4th, 5th and 6th........ Laughing

Well, I generally burble around at low revs enjoying the soundtrack, but when in the mood the old girl picks up her skirts and pulls well up to about 4,500 with a surprising turn of speed and a nice hard edged roar.

But then it is a petrol v8 Very Happy Fully Restored 89 110 CSW V8

Like miss daisy between 2000 and 2500 rpm every now and again it sees 4000 but it`s a bit loud,
I did`ent buy it to go fast I wanted something to last and plenty of room for my kit

It is fun when you can sit on a saxo`s rear waiting for the speed limiter to come in Crying or Very sad Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires.
