Spare wheel adapters / swing away wheel carrier
Hello All

I'm looking for some advice. I've just changed my wheels on my Puma 110 to 20" alloys using Rakeway adapters.

For my spare wheel I think I could buy a Disco2 rear door carrier....but if I want to fit a swing away wheel carrier the bolt pattern will be for Defender.....Does this mean I'm forced to buy another wheel adapter?

cheers

Richard

Yes, unless you could get one altered to suit your wheel stud pattern. Brendan (Leeds) has made arrangements for specials to be built by Safari Equip before, so he would be good starting point. Darren

Thinking about it a bit more, if you have bespoke carrier made then you're stuffed if you (or a future owner) decides to revrt to standard wheels. On that basis, an adpater on a standard carrier may be a better bet? Darren

Could you not get spare wheel carrier produced with two set of holes in it. One set for original wheels, other for new wheels. Then put bolts through holes, with nuts clamping the back plate of carrier, depending on which wheels you were using.

Not sure if that makes any sense when read back Embarassed

My carrier in photo, but where I have extra hole, you could have one opposite it, with the new stud pattern. So remove bolts from one pair of holes, to other set.

Oh the joys of mixing kit from different after market suppliers..

Have no idea on cost of adaptors v the cost of altering a swingaway wheel carrier.

Yes you could use an adaptor, however that moves the wheel further away from the door which might put more stress on different components of the wheel carrier. Will this be a problem? Would depend on design of wheel carrier

The other thing to consider is moving the spare wheel further out then normal the tyre may not be in contact with the frame etc. This may cause the spare wheel to vibrate more then normal.

This would also depend on the 'offset' of the particular wheel rim being used.

So best advice might well be to stick to original wheel PCD then wheel carrier choice is not comprised.

If going down a different PCD and adaptor route I would suggest trying one of your new rim/tyre adaptor on a wheel carrier to see if things work ok.

Carefully consider what you want to achieve/budget before opening your wallet.

If you want to go down the swingaway wheel carrier route let me know and I will see what options are available.

Moving the spare wheel further away from the door should cause minimal increase in the moment it causes on the frame so I wouldn't worry about it.
It would take a significant distance increase to cause problems and distort the frame.
Bearing in mind a safety factor has to be built in you should be fine on that front.

Not sure how vibration would be affected

If it was me andy's method seems easiest and most effective. Defender 90 XS TD5 (03 Reg)

thanks for all the replies. Its a minefield!

.....food for thought.....

I'm now just wondering if to take off the spare wheel all together and when I do venture far I strap the spare either in the back of my trailer or inside the cab.... Mmmmmmm. I just know the 1 time I forgot to take the spare with me, I'll need it..... Then again I think in the last 23 years driving I've maybe used a spare once......

Thanks again

Cheers

Depends really on usage? I too have only ever used the spare once in all my years of motoring. Obviously some newer vehicles today don't even come with a spare. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!
