Definitely not a kangaroo. When you run into one it invariably comes in through the windscreen. I would have remembered that.

What mileage have you done?
If the A frame ball joint has movement in it, the diff will rotate slightly as forward or rearward load is taken up, giving a clicking from the ball joint. The joint should not be a problem at low mileage but will deteriorate as water and rubbish damage it. It should have a grease nipple and it would then last a lot longer, and you can fit one. Try prising the A frame at the ball joint with a tyre lever or such and see if there is any movement. If it's sound you will have to look at a dozen other possibilities. |

Just went out and tried for movement in the A frame. Seems tight, although it is hard to get purchase on all angles.
Tested for brake pad movement but unable to duplicate the sound I thought I heard earlier. Took the wheel off but no sound. It is noticable also after stopping on a incline and applying the handbrake. The roll foward after releasing the footbrake produces the click. Def is 35,000kms old. I know I can take it to the dealer, but they can never locate issues such as this. Austen. Rover 12 1935 Rover 20 1940 Rover 100 1960 Defender TDC1 2008 FL2 TD4 2008 |

Could it be the A frame on your rear suspension? There have been 2 service notifications about this:
Publication No.: 204-Q055 Model: Defender Model Year: 2009 VIN Range: LD771715 – LD772545 Date of Issue: 03 February 2009 Subject: ‘A’ Frame Suspension Arm Expiry Date: 28 February 2011 In plant quality inspections have determined that on a number of 2009MY Defender vehicles, the 'A' frame top link arm bushes at the chassis bracket location end of the arm can rotate due to a potential ovality/oversize of the bore in which the bush is installed. Customers may experience vibration and a noise likely to be a whine. and Publication No. 501-Q036v2 Model Defender 90, 110, 130 Model Year 2007MY VIN Range LD736064 to LD752152 Date of Issue: 26 February 2009 Subject 'A' Frame Chassis Brackets Expiry Date 28 February 2010 A number of 2007MY Defender vehicles may have a durability concern relating to a manufacturing change to the 'A' frame chassis brackets. If a vehicle is not repaired, the long term durability of the 'A' frame bracket is not assured and failure of the bracket will result in a degree of rear axle steering and body swaying and the vehicle may not respond as the driver intended. Neither of them mention a clicking but it might be worth checking with the dealer than these service bulletins don't apply (it is highly unlikely that they do but always worth checking). What makes me laugh is that in the fix for the second one they weld on a strengthener and warn "WARNING - HOT WAX MAY DRIP FROM THE CHASSIS" One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS + New Defender 110 First Edition |

Mine is a 2008 with the welded, as opposed to bolted A links. The welding looks fine and appears to have the added patch. However it could quite well be the bushes.
I dont think it is coming from the handbrake, although I have issues with this as I have run out of thread on the outer cable. The dragging is back now that the dealer has changed the clutch. I had the brake set up perfectly and asked them not to touch the adjustment, but a bit hard to avoid I suppose when changing the clutch. Austen. Yes, that could well be the sound. Should I dismantle and check or leave it to the dealer?

Sounds as though you still haven't located your problem.
The short cut is to get the vehicle over a pit. You can then have it moved back and forward while you are safely under it and able to observe and listen for the noise. That would let you narrow it down to the location of the source. That would eliminate a lot of potential problem areas. If you can't narrow it down over a pit you will have to roll around under there on your back, eliminating possibilities. I would start with the front and rear tailshafts. Chock your wheels so the car can't roll on you. Take it out of gear and handbrake off. Push pull and lever each of the universal joints and the flanges into the diffs and transfer case. Look for movement. There will be some rotational movement to each shaft so rock them back and forth to see if the click occurs as the pre loads take up. The tail shafts each have a sliding section which is not greased on my Puma. See if there is excessive movement in the shaft at that section. Let's know how it goes and if no joy there's plenty more to look at. |
