Hi Ozzie
Is it lifted or any changes to the suspension? Check the props are tight Check Wheel bearings Is the exhaust loose anywhere? |

It's not unknown for the bonnet to vibrate at certain engine speeds, also the turbo heatshield can rattle.

bpman - No the vehicle is completely standard, nothing loose I can find, UJ's are tight and greased. Ill admit I haven't checked wheel bearings as I wouldn't put it down to those with the type of noise, but will check all the same.
blackwolf - Thanks for the tip, I'd have never thought of the bonnet. Turbo heatshield is solid though! Thanks both for the tips, I will continue searching Now: 2010 2.4 TDCi 110 Utility Wagon Then: 2004 2.5 TD5 90 Hard Top (X-Tech Edition) |

it is not an unbalanced propshaft as it happends regardless the vehicle speed. What about the fan or any pulley? Puma 110" SW

Interesting read. Having gone from a Td5 xtech, to a Tdci with 30 thou miles on it. I do find that mine has a rumble/rattle at low revs. A bit like your in a too high gear, bit more revs, ok. Less revs ok.
I just thought it was the Tdci way So will keep an eye on this thread. Andy |

Mine is at the same revs as described by the OP. I would describe as more of a chatter, can't believe it's the clutch, could be gearbox, but think it may just be what Tdci's do! Mind does it a lot less now it's been remapped, as it spends less time in this rev range as it just pulls through, and as soon as is above 2000 rpm, no noise.

MK - I agree, propshaft wouldn't be my first port of call as I would expect it to happen regardless of a set rev range and the noise goes away when not accelerating. If all else fails I will remove one prop at a time to rule out front/rear drive train. I will check pulley's etc. thanks.
Keith - It definitely isn't a rattle as you're describing, but I'll bear it in mind. Andy - I thought also it may be a TDCi thing, but it's starting to annoy me as I find myself adjusting my revs/speed to get rid of the noise which I really don't feel I should have to do. For example in 4th I have to do 29mph, if I hit 30 or 31 the vibration/noise seems to resonate throughout the cabin making it quite unpleasant. I also wouldn't describe it as a chatter, unless I'm misunderstood a chatter would be more like loose cogs moving back and forth very quickly making a chattering metallic sound. I would describe it more as though you were labouring the engine, as if the rev's were too low, but they aren't. It's all confusing I haven't had time to go out tonight as I was late in from work, but hopefully tomorrow night I will take all your suggestions and see what I come up with thank you! mine is 100 times better since greasing the adaptor shaft , it wasn't really worn just dry , it used to rattle a bit on light load in lower gears even from new a bit , I whipped transfer box out just to check shaft because of all the talk of them wearing the splines and then striping the splines losing drive .
just packed it with grease then refitted but it really has made a big big difference to it |

Mine drones a little. Currently its got only 650miles on the clock and has an engine/turbo/actuator problem that is still being diagnosed so for me it could be related to that.
I've yet to check if it's as rev dependant as yours, but id describe it as sounding like you're in too high a gear for the road speed. I've yet to do any sound deadening but hoping this will hide it!! |

Thanks for the further info
I managed to get 15 min on it last night and decided to grease the props/UJ's as it looks like it wasn't done on service (just before I bought it a month ago). Sadly, both props are Sealed-For-Life units, grrrr I was surprised how much movement there was on the rubber mountings for the gearbox/transfer box. My old TD5 was solid, but then the rear prop is longer giving me more leverage to move it I suppose. I'm still convinced the issue (if it actually is one as a lot of you seem to have it) is coming from the front end, and the more I look the more I think it's engine related. I've run it up with transfer box in neutral and can't hear it, all sounds sweet, but then there is no load on anything. I'll update when I've had a bit more time on the weekend hopefully Now: 2010 2.4 TDCi 110 Utility Wagon Then: 2004 2.5 TD5 90 Hard Top (X-Tech Edition) |

An update, not found anything definitive.
Got the wheels up in the air and checked wheel bearings, UJ's etc. for play. All solid as I would expect. There is a little play in the transfer box output to the front prop. There is quite a bit of play in the rear diff and/or drive flanges (need to pop cap off to check if it's the drive flanges, but sounds more like the diff) - however I don't think it's excessive although more than I'd like. I'm sure my 90 didn't have that much play, but then it had a normal rover axle on the back. Due to the above I'm ruling out the transmission. Strangely the noise seemed to quieten down on Saturday but was back yesterday - I'm pretty convinced it's coming from the engine or engine bay area. So nowhere near to a solution, I'm starting to think it may just be the way the engines are as I don't fancy stripping the head etc. to look for a problem that isn't there. If anyone finds any more info it would be good to know, I'll do the same, but for now I think I'll have to put up with it Now: 2010 2.4 TDCi 110 Utility Wagon Then: 2004 2.5 TD5 90 Hard Top (X-Tech Edition) |

Check your airbox for leaves and clean it out as well as the air filter. I have a snorkel and still found some leaves in there.
Still early days but sometimes it was as if it had a powerhole around 2000rpm. Seems smoother now and did not experience it having a rough run between 1700-2000rpm which it sometimes had when putting the foot down. If it did not go away, I'll be sure to tell that it did not solve it, but it just might be that simple. |
