Two inscriptions on the fly leaf of a book I took down this evening.
First inscription "Humphrey From Granny Xmas 1913" Second inscription "Humphrey Thornhill R.N. Gave His Life For His King And Country August 1916." Like I said food for thought. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

Very relevant this year Thomas and probably more relevant in 2016. A number of us are revisiting The Somme in 2016, the least we can do. Hoping there will be more than a few Defenders there.

Looks like Humphrey was born in 1894 and may have been lost when a destroyer was lost in 1916, born in County Louth-was there any connection with Newcastle, Tyne and Wear? Steve |

I have no information other than what is written on the flyleaf. The trip to the Somme seems like a very poignant exercise and I hope it goes well.How did you get the additional information on Humphrey?
The age would suit as the book is R M Ballantyne's "Blown To Bits, or the Lonely Man of Rakata. A tale of the Malay Archipelago". It has the explosion of Krakatoa as a back drop. So he was 17 when given the book and 20 years of age when he died. So sad. If Humphrey died when a destroyer he was on went down the title of the book was somewhat prophetic 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |
