TD5 Low fuel cause pump squelch / whine
Some of you may recall I had a couple of starting issues with the TD5, I replaced the injector seals and O-rings, injector harness and cleaned out the oil in the loom (repeatedly)

I have also bought a new LR Air Bleed Valve for the fuel filter housing but when I came to change it the one I rmeoved was shorter in length and no plastic gauze bit was in there. The new part would not screw into the housing either so I ended up just leaving it as it was.

So now we are up to date, the problem is that when the fuel is low I have to turn the ignition to II and let the pump run and the glow pug go out before I start it as it sounds squelchy like its getting air out, when I do that it does start ok, maybe a couple of turns every so often. If the tank is aboue 1/2 then I dont have any problems, fuel pump is quiet pretty much straight away with minimal air purge noises.

Every time I research this problem the answer is more often than not to change the injector seals and O-rings but as I mentioned I have already done this. I was planning on buying a new LR fuel filter housing which come with a fuel filter and seeing if this made a difference. I wanted to eliminate the air bleed valve issue and also get to the bottom of the different part that I found in place.

Anyone else been in this posistion, any other suggestions? Michael was just telling me a story about a friend of his who slept with a land rover, lonely nights in the desert..

You should let the glow plug go out anyway.

Yes very true, which is another reason I've not really been pushing for answers, I'm quite happy to let it go through the process of warming up before starting. Even so, it still is a lot of squelching from the pump. Michael was just telling me a story about a friend of his who slept with a land rover, lonely nights in the desert..

Yep that's the purge. Did you fit genuine seals and washers to the injectors as I've heard of non gen ones failing quite quickly

Yes all genuine parts. It actually ran smoother after doing the seals and O-rings. I never get the fuel down as low as the Orange as I think it would struggle more and eventually not start, although I have never put that into practice. Michael was just telling me a story about a friend of his who slept with a land rover, lonely nights in the desert..

Are there any leaks from the FPR?

There may be.... The reason I say this is I saw the usual signs, bellhousing with oily residue and oily puddle on floor so I bought replacement Vigo O-rings and gasket. On closer inspection this weekend I noticed the rocker gasket was leaking at the back where that half moon shape is, so I fixed that and gave it all a clean. I'm going to run it for a couple of days and check the fpr again as the oil leak muddied the waters so to speak. Michael was just telling me a story about a friend of his who slept with a land rover, lonely nights in the desert..

If it is the FPR that is leaking would that acount for the noise? I didnt think air could get in through the FPR only fuel out? Michael was just telling me a story about a friend of his who slept with a land rover, lonely nights in the desert..

If their is enough gap for fuel to get out, there's enough gap for air to get in

No problem, considering our vehicles are twins it seems logical for me to carry out the same repairs Laughing Michael was just telling me a story about a friend of his who slept with a land rover, lonely nights in the desert..

Hi Mk1,

I managed to get the time to give the FPR new seals and new gasket last night, as ever the job took longer than expected with me trying to get the actual pressure regulator out to fit the big O ring.

ANyways, still quite a bit of whining / purging from the fuel pump. My next port of call is the fuel filter and I have decided to go with a new filter head as the one I have got is just causing me confusion. I previously bought a new air bleed valve but after checking the head on mine the connection looked different, front and rear connections.

Anyways, thats by the by, just thought I'd give an update. Smile
