Depends what side steps you go for.
If its the fold up ones they are universal to 90-110-130. The tubular ones I think those designed for 110 double cab will fit as that is effectively what a 130 is up to the back of the cab. Be cool to see a 130 van haven't seen one of those in the flesh Will keep an eye out for you |

No ABS or TC on 130, but I don't miss it.
Doesn't fit in a single parking space at the shops, need to shove back end into the bushes around edge of car parks!! Other than that they are perfect. Basically the Daddy of all Defenders. 130 Puma HCPU with an Artica 240LR Demountable Camper |

There are no disadvantages on a 130. It has a tray with proper size. Very useful for camping also. The 130 is the Defender for men. With the rugged steel wheels. No offense intended

There is no disadvantage to owing a 130, in fact there are lots of advantages. The main one being a very smoother ride
If you are talking about the Land Rover tube type side steps I don't think they are available for the 130. I make my own then galvanise and powder coat them. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |

We make our own 130 side steps too, LR dont sell 130 ones, but the 110/90 ones are rubbish and offer very little protection.

Hi all, looking at getting a 130 aswel. I have found a very tidy standard 300tdi with 150 thousand on the clock. It's is going to be used as a work motor and the only family transport. Now what I would like to know would it be worth saving some more and get a td5. Your thoughts would be a great help.

I would suggest that a nice tidy 300TDI 130 is a good bet and they're getting rather sought after. A TD5 is not necessarily an "upgrade"...
Speak to a lot of die hard landy people who have tried all incarnations and many would prefer the 300TDI - there are plenty of threads on TDI & TD5 pros and cons and I shall not get into that here |

I would go for the td5. Dont know about the uk but out here in the bush it is easier to get spares for a td5. If you go overlanding Id take an atric or similar small scanner, spare ecu and sensor kit (people say its useful I never had problems). 300 tdi is said to be more reliable. I owned a td5 a few years ago and it never skipped a beat. Look around the forum for what to avoid in a td5

Chris, the most important thing is get a good solid defender. The power plants are different BUT it's not a racing car. It's not even a luke warm hatch so the minimal extra power delivery the TD5 will give is outweighed by the additional cost and potential repair bills. A td5 is circa double the 300tdi to replace. There are no additional benefits unlike the Tdci which gives you 6 speed box and a heater that works I'd personally rather spend strong money on a really good 300tdi than chuck extra at an average Td5. And I love the Td5 engine, preferring it to the Tdci I have got New project and it's green: www.projectoverland.info |
