Pulling Power
Hi,

My 2.2 110XS gets delivered in March. Will it have enough power to tow our double axle caravan without crawling along?

Anyone else use a standard 2.2 for towing their caravan?

They pull like a train... You won't have any problems with it I'm sure! How heavy is the caravan? An engine to TDi for!

Twin Axle caravans are typically around 1600kg unladen, so well within the capability of a Defender. The 2.2 engine in the 110 feels more sluggish than in the 90, simply down to its extra weight. Whether the level of performance is adequate for you, is another matter, but its of comfort that it can be addressed if you feel it appropriate.

Our caravan is 1900kg. It tows OK on a standard mapped 2.2 110. It tows better with the BAS Remap, less downshifts required to maintain 60 mph on hills if keeping your speed up is important.

My caravan is 1845kg and it's no problem, nothing like the disco 3 or the tdv8 RRS though Big Cry but still very capable
I will have mine mapped this year to help out

I've a 1½ ton single axle Carlight which tows happily behind my TD5 Ninety.
70mph on motorways (French Rolling Eyes ) is no problem whatever.
Twin axle caravans should only create more drag on corners.

Apart from being a bit slower when pulling away from, say, roundabouts it will trundle along happily. You'll wonder how you ever towed with anything else (well I do anyway) Thumbs Up
