Eric, to my knowledge there is no simple test to decide if a tyre is SAFE.

However a visual inspection could show that a tyre is UNSAFE.

Just because a tyre does not LOOK unsafe does not mean it is SAFE

If you read the link Gum put up

He said recommendations from manufacturers said tyres should not be fitted to cars if they are six years old, and should be replaced if they are 10 years old.

He said that this was not a legal requirement and that it did not apply to coaches or lorries, which was "frustrating".

BFG recommend tyres should not be used after 10 years old.

New tyres should not be fitted if more then 6 years old.

Brendan, all good then. No doubt that I will replace both my winter and summer tires before they will blow out 10 candles.
But for now, as said, with perfect visuals and gentle driving only they should remain ok for a few years to come. Thumbs Up
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Just to give some info on truck tyres

Michilen truck tyres are used till there 2-4 mm then recut.then you send them back for a remix which is basically a retread. This again can be used until it's recut and then sent back for a final remould called an encore again this can be ran until it needs cutting then finally it gets retired

Loads of info online.

I know it's not car tyres but I have been to stoke and seen the process the tyres go thru and each casing is x rayed and goes thru a surprising amount of qc checks.

I had a set of tyres on my old Disco, they were 8 year old and hardly used, It went in for a MOT and it failed on tyres as they were passed the recommended age.

I'm not aware that there's an actual reason for rejection based solely on the age of a tyre - are you sure it wasn't the physical condition but due to age?

Brendan's point on the age of new tyres begs the question of how many people look at the age of the new tyre when it's fitted?

Nothing wrong other than the age. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place,
so it doesn't take much to Censored us off.

Checking the age of a tyre is not part of an Mot test and should not be a reason for refusal of a test certificate. In fact a tyre can be so old the sidewalls have badly perished and again that is not a reason to refuse a test certificate or even note it as an advisory. Surprised

The burst tyre had a dot code giving its age and caused the accident as it finally failed, he said.

So, my immediate thought on this thread was: I picked up my Landy second hand, and have NO idea how old the tyres are -- three GG TR, one Nokian IIRC with a similar tread and a BFG AT as the spare ( Rolling Eyes I'll think about that next time).

Off to Google to look at tyre dot codes ... 2009 110 XS Station Wagon
