I bought my '07 DC pre-owned in July 2010 with 38k miles on the clock and in the four years since have added 100k miles to the total (now ~140k miles). In my ownership I have replaced the following (these are the things which have broken or been defective, not the things replaced as upgrades):-
Clutch - it had the original one with defective springs Sump - it had the early one which gets clobbered by the propshaft Front diff - it had the early "2 pinion" diff which suffered a catastrophic failure Front halfshafts - spline failure at diff end probably resulting from the diff failure Rear halfshafts and drive flanges - spline failure Dip/Indicator stalk switch - origininal melted Fuel tank breather - replaced due to the crud ingress problem Volume Control Valve on fuel pump - original failed due to fuel contamination Wiper motor park switch Water pump - leak through spindle gland Rear propshaft rear UJ Failure of turbo to intercooler hose due to abrasionon the steering column N/S/R hub oil seal Other problems it has had (or has) are intermittent failure to start (various reasons, mainly due to poor connections to the relays under the o/s front seat), repeated leaks from the exhaust manifold (which works loose about once a year), repeated failures of the CDL wires to the rear doors, intermittent failure of the front n/s door interior light switch. I think that that is about it. The clutch, sump, and tank breather would have been replaced by LR as service items had the previous owner thought to get them done before the warranty ran out. It is now apparent to me that the vehicle had a pretty hard life with its first owner (I am the third, and know the second well), and some of the problems undoubtedly originate with this phase of its life. Is this an excessive list for a vehicle which was and is worked hard, is now 7 years old with 140k miles on the clock? I don't think so. It is undoubtedly more than my Disco 2 has needed, which is 12 years old and has done over 200k miles, but I owned that from new. Regardless of the above, I love my Defender a great deal and driving it still puts a smile on my face. It does everything I want and makes me happy. I cannot think of any current vehicle I would want to change it for - there is nothing like a Defender. . |

I bought my '08 130 in sep '09 as it was left behind at the dealers, Defenders are rare beasts around here, we are plagued with jap trucks. So far it has 151k km. So far all it has needed is 3 clutch swaps (under warranty), windscreen wiper mechanism except the electric motor (converted to euros about 250 including dealer labour) and rear shock rubbers. Suspension is still the stock so are springs and shocks. Besides this it has been oil, filters and break pads. Clutch is now making the rattle noise but still works fine. Transfer case has a leak. Thats about it. I dont drive over 80kph speeds on the open road, keep under 30kph on gravel roads and on serious off roading as slow as possible and as fast as necessary. Hope to get injectors cleaned soon, fuel quality here is very poor. Wouldnt drive anything else. Best vehicle in the world. My only concern is if pumas are disposable engines. After my engine dies I plan to rebuild it and keep on going. When gearbox dies I hope it will be in a very long time when Im old and grumpy so Ill just put in an auto from ashcroft! My gear changes are perfect I know its not a porsche I take my time and let it do its thing. Cheers!

I have mine from new since Dec 2007 and despite a non promising start in the first 3 years, now is very quiet and pleasant car with the normal leakages in the transfer box.
My list of failures at the beginning are quite big: the clutch failure, the oil sump hit by the driveshaft, 2 vacuum pumps changed, the rear door cracked and a long list of details (near 80 claims), Add to that a useless dealer and you have a perfect recipe for the disapointment. But after those 3 years of almost all the failures that appears in the services bulletins, now the defender is behavior as a "normal" car without major failures Really if I change it, will be for a nother Defender. This car suits all our requirements and we feel very confortable with it after more than 6 years of ownership and 170.000 km in the clock. Still I smile when I saw it in the parking place or I feel like an explorer when I ride it in the city. So I can say that I'm happy with it ![]() MY 2007 110 SW PUMA 2.4: Big Fog of 64' MY 1994 Jayco 1207 Folding camper: "El Tremendo" ![]() Click image to enlarge |
