To be honest where the LR is so simplistic you'd be better off selling it for around £50 - £80 and buying an aftermarket Head Unit which is USB capable which the majority are.
Even if it's only a cheap HU from a decent brand it would be an improvement IMO, to swap it'd cost you nothing pretty much and a basic HU which is single din should be a piece of cake to fit.

I store a fair amount of music on my phone(android not one of those i things) I have a double ended jack plug thingy, one end in the phone, the other into the face plate of the radio. The phone in a cradle on the dash, can be charging at the same time with a charger in its bottom, it plays through the auxillary setting on the head unit and the bonus is that if I get a call it stops playing music, switches over to phone and acts as a hands free. The Defenders speakers act as phone speakers and I can talk quite normally at the phone without altering my driving position. When the call ends it goes bak to where it left off playing music. Cost me around £4 for the lead from Maplins.
