Grease Points For Puma
Can anyone let me know how many grease points there are on a Puma 110? I've been searching high and low and only found two on the drive shaft...

I've struggled finding anything online as well, pics/diagrams etc...

Any help much appreciated!

From memory (what's left of it) mines only 1 on each UJ. The fronts were a pig to grease so I put extended nipples on and now it's much easier.
I suspect they never ever got greased by the stealer during warranty servicing.

As stated above there is a nipple on each UJ plus one on the sliding splined part of the shaft, so 6 in total. You may find that one or more of the nipples has fallen out (there was a service bulletin on some models for this).

Any good general purpose lithium or molybdenum based grease will do. I use Castol LMX* (which used to be Castol LM, which was every manufacturer's preferred general purpose and wheel-bearing grease for about the last 150 years, but I think has recently been discontinued).

You will get a much better result if you unbolt at least one end of the propshaft prior to greasing to that you can articulate the joints fully and extend and retract the splined part to get the grease distributed properly. It also allows good access to the nipples with a standard grease gun.

The WSM does of course say that you shouldn't reuse the flange nuts, but in practice they can be used a small number of times (2 or 3 at least) without risk. The nuts are standard 3/8" UNF Nylocs and a bagful from your local fastener dealer will be cheap in comparison to genuine parts.

Prop shafts don:t (always) have nipples on them, some (mine) are sealed for life versions.

You CAN'T just use any old grease... Different types of grease react with other types of grease. They break down and become useless as a lubricant... Always best to use what the manufacturer has specified unless the grease has been changed.

I use a lithium general purpose one. Its black and not very thick and I find one pump of the grease gun lever every 4 months does the trick ie you see grease just starting to ooze out of the gaps. Its not a job I look forward to though. MY11s don't have sliding joint nipples so you're at the mercy of the assembly guys

Mine only has the nipples on the UJs and not the sliding part.

Would it ever be worthwhile unbolting one end and sliding the 2 bits apart and apply grease to the splines?

Extending the shaft to grease the splines wouldn't do any harm at all, but don't pull the halves completely apart since the alignment is important.

You're sure the shaft isn't drilled for a nipple that simply isn't fitted? Definitely a backward step if not.

And very strange grease nipples on the front uj's that you can't get to. So doubt they have ever been greased Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

My front props also had some strange nipples on them (that sounds dodgy) they were different to the back ones and apart from being very awkward to get to, they seem to need a different fitting to take the grease gun... ARRRRGGG! Big Cry

I had to unbolt one end of the prop, swing it about so I could grease both uj's. Think I'll be getting two new props in the future. Crying or Very sad
