When I ordered my 110 van last December for delivery in early March this year, the dealer told me it would have ABS and traction control as standard, so there was no need to include it as an optional extra. He also said that was why the RRP had gone up a bit for the 2014MY.
Was he wrong? |

Yep know that My point is DSC requires (in addition to what you mentioned):- yaw rate, longitudinal and lateral acceleration, vehicle speed, engine speed, throttle position, brake pedal position/force and steering angle. As far as I am aware (I could be wrong) the current model can monitor the following:- vehicle speed, engine speed, throttle position, individual wheel speed (with ABS) and brake on or off (not brake force). So The yaw rate, this would involve the fitting of height sensors, one on each corner. Longitudinal and lateral acceleration forces would be a simple box of electrics. A steering angle sensor will have to be fitted to the steering column. The D3, D4, FFRR and RRS also have the ability to 'sort' the suspension when the DSC kicks in. Is the 15MY going to have this as well? This would require air suspension or some sort of lever system so stop vehicle roll. This all seems a lot of work if the vehicle is going out of production. If they are going to fit all of the above, lets hope that they produce lots of parts as I can imaging quite a few people will want to 'up grade' their existing vehicles. A Defender with DSC....... unless you can turn it off say good bye to play days. |

Just watch now as that production end dates gets shoved further and further back, just as has been the case for the past twenty years...This does sound like an awful lot of work for just a few months production, they would have seen this coming years ago, so something isn't right here. 2011 110 USW

Totally agree. I wouldn't mind betting that it is an EU requirement for some form of DSC to be fitted from 2015, and therefore it has to be fitted in order to continue production to the end. If it is a legal requirement then it is possible that the minimum technical requirement is for a simpler system that that which we have come to consider normal. We shall see. |

There's been a considerable spend by JLR on keeping Defender both compliant with the rules and updating trim. There is investment required in the specification and tooling for new seat coverings, new keys, new alarm system, Euro V engine, DEFENDER bonnet badge etc etc. There's a very large investment required to implement a DSC system, not just piece cost of fitting the parts - the calibration of the system is complex and requires a fair few engineer-years to do.
Certainly doesn't tally (to me) with a vehicle completely at the end of its life. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |
