They are definitely solid, I changed them for 110 vented discs and callipers about 9 months ago.

I must admit to being a little suprised when i first took my front wheels off when i first bought mine and found vented discs i thought they only went on 110,s.
Were they an option ? do you get them on a station wagon and not a commercial ? Anyone know ? 2005 Td5 90 XS Steve |

Maybe it was an option, you might have just been lucky and somebody had replaced them it does improve the braking a fair bit, but the last 2 Defender I have had (2004 and 2006) have both had solid discs.
Anyway... anybody know if they'll fit?!! |

More likely the factory ran out of solid discs that day and just fitted everything with vented 2005 Td5 90 XS

Front or rear,90 or 110, I think 90's had solids on the front and 110 should be vented on the front solid rears. Not sure from when, earliest would be 300 when they put discs on the rears,i guess. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

Pretty sure it'd have rear drums on a vehicle of that age? A mate of mine has a 1990, and that has drums on. An engine to TDi for!

Sorry if there was any confusion - I was only talking about the fronts, the discs and pads on the 1989 Defender are pretty shot, so....
I have a spare pair of front discs, pads and callipers from my 2006 Defender and wondered if they will fit the older 1989 model, the drums on the rear are getting sorted. |

Yes, the later TD5 discs and calipers will fit your earlier Defender without a problem.

Brill, good news
I'm not a tight wallet but they are just sitting on the shelf in my garage. Thanks for the replies. My 2006 Td5 had solid discs until I upgraded them with new callipers and vented discs from a 110, not a massive improvement over the solid ones but definitely better. |

Grafty - did you try the brakes before and after the braided hoses were fitted or do it all in one go? I just wondered how much difference they make?

Braided hoses on a motorbike are a massive improvement over standard rubber,it's a mod I have lined up for mine. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

Unfortunately I did it all at once as my old discs and calipers were shot.
There is, however, much more feel to the brakes. You can brake really hard and know when you're about to lock up, whereas with the rubber hoses you would brake hard but not quite know when you were going to lock up so you ended up not using the brakes to their full potential. Also, because the 110 rear calipers are larger, when you brake hard - instead of the front diving down and the rear going skittish the whole thing hunkers down and is really stable under braking. How much of this is down to the braided hoses I don't know, but the braking feel is much improved over the originals and I would defiantly reccomend them Gave me much more confidence to brake hard in the wet too.
