Procedure for swaping ecu's?
I've read some posts on various forums but i didn't come to a conclusion..
I've got a spare ecu anyway(among other parts previous owner gave me).
I was thinking of getting it programmed with a stock fuel map and keeping it as a "backup".
Does anyone know the procedure to swap the ecu when in need?
Can it be done with a nanocom?
I've read something about the AS10 and "learn ecu" strategy,has anyone swaped ecu's by themshelves?

Not sure if this can be done with a Nanocom... not something I've ever played with. But easy with the dealer spec SDD.

The proper process is:

With original ECU plugged in, the diagnostic tool will look at VIN, Injector Numbers and CCF (car config file)

You then swap the ECU over and the tool will program that information into the new ECU (it must be new and not used - as you will get a VIN mismatch).

Next will do the security learn process (so pairs the ECU to the alarm 10AS unit and the IPK - instrument cluster).

Then it will look at the vehicle spec and load in the correct base engine calibration.

Once this is done, it will prompt you to do pump learn and pilot injection learn.

Job done - you have another ECU.



If you just want it as a back up only...

You could get someone to clone the ECU fitted to your Defender, and flash all the info into the new ECU (but you would have to send off both ECU's).

Or you could have it programmed with a correct standard Calibration and the immobiliser functions removed (this can be done without your original ECU).

And although the injector numbers would be wrong(although we could program yours in at same time) it would run... but for long term use you should do pump and pilot injector learn! But to get you home would be ok.

With the immo turned off, this becomes a plug and play ECU for any 2.4 Tdci Puma (very handy if you go on trips with other 2.4 Tdci owners). As the one spare will work on all cars without a problem. No programming required. It is also handy for example if you damaged the IPK and 10AS.

Unfortunately it is also very handy if you want to drive off in a Puma for which you don't have the key!

Make sure as part of your layered approach to security that your ECU and its connectors are extremely well protected.

Well i checked some part numbers and i am confused now..
My puma runs on an 7H12-12C520-BF ecu,spare ecu is NNW511400 but on microcat says NNW501630.
Are all the same and interchangeable??
I'll have to go to a dealer Twisted Evil to try the programming procedure,the thing is that i don't know if the spare ecu is blank or re-written,i plugged it yesterday from curiosity,when ign-on, temp needle went to red zone so it's not synced with the rest of the electronics and of course it didn't start..

The ECU you've got as your spare will be fine.

As mentioned before, I can flash the spare ECU on the bench if easier than getting your dealer to do it.

Not sure if you had experience using a Faultmate (BlackBox-Solutions) to replace an Puma 2.4 ECU with a brand new ECU ? 1997 Land Rover Defender 110 HT 2.8i

I was able to use the Faultmate to transfer the MAP (i used the same LR MAP as was used on my old ECU)
- Obviously before the above, as you just connected the ECU and battery and key-on, Temp needle goes to red, no oil light, no Engine Check light, and no settings shown (meaning no settings shown) on faultmate ECU settings page, which is expected

Once the above tranfer completed and key-off and key-on all the dashlight is working as is should. The settings page is populated with the expected values

Program the injector values
Obviously 2x fault codes shown as expected
- Pilot correction not yet initiated
- Pump learning not not yet

I am stuck with the DDS Learning:
I followed the process to the 'T', but even after 30min the alarm LED still flushing indicating the DDS learning process is still busy

To add to my previous post

I now come to the conclusion that yes from a theoretical point Faultmate should be able to perform a DDS learn on a Puma 2.4, but it aint never worked

All over the forums (BBS included) there is enough evidence this is the case. Unfortunately many who tried, worked with broken vehicles and it ended up never been proven fact because the broken vehicles had their own challenges for been broken

When you try an new from LR bought, engine ECU and swap on a healthy vehicle doing this with the faultmate, can get you to a point where you can transfer the software, set the injector codes, but without the DDS learn process (Obviously the pilot correct and pump learning also Faultmate can help

So i have to find another why to preform the DDS learn
Obviously there is many option available to get passed this, not yet an option that is in my garage Smile

I was so hoping that the Faultmate which is in my garage, could do this... I always wanted to play with this so i can learn in case i need to perform this in this sticks, but to scared to try until now

On my 2.8i i played a lot to swap ECU's so to get comfortable for when i needed it in the sticks and i decided it is now time I do this on the Puma

I have 2x Puma 2.4 and on one of them 2 years ago, I decided to take the leap of faith to upgrade one of them so that both has the same LR software version and Faultmate was working well doing this. Even doing the programing on the new ECU was done well using Faultmate. pitty about the DDS learn 1997 Land Rover Defender 110 HT 2.8i

Update to my previous posts

Short: I purschased the Gap-Diagnostic IIDTool BT, and learn the security code so now with the new engine ECU i can start the engine

Before I had IIDTool I tried to install brand new engine ECU using faultmate
So I Used Faultmate to :
Flush engine ecu with the same version of software as the old one
Program the injector values
I was stuck with the 10AS security learn because faultmate can clearly not perform this with the DDS Learn funtion

Purchased IIDTool
Perform 10AS security learn (less than 1 minute process)
Engine started as normal
So i decided to use the IIDTool to complete
- Pilot correction and Pump learning

Job Done (Just sad i had to buy another tool) 1997 Land Rover Defender 110 HT 2.8i

To be able to mount another used ECU in a vehicle there are only two options, the first the timing of the ECU, the second the immobilizer override
