Yes, I have driven some of the tracks around Birdsville.

Yes they can get exceedingly wet!. Yes route finding can get 'interesting' when you get bypasses to the bypasses to the bypasses.

Many of the tracks in Australia do get closed when conditions get difficult.

That video? Passengers commenting where is the track because visibility out of windscreen was zero for many seconds at a time whilst travelling at about 40 mph/60kmh?

Australian tracks can get badly corrugated and rutted which can set like concrete, resulting in the need for the roads to be graded.

Interesting with the water coming down the inside of the windows Laughing

Thought the vehicles coming in the opposite direction made a bit of a meal of it, although it did look very slippery.

as you can see it has only recently rained. The tracks in the road are few, and sensible people sit for another day or two and let the road dry. Not drive it then wonder how they are going to open the caper that night. But people have itineraries to keep and won't change them.
Once the road is ripped up it them makes doing 250km at 25km/h far more annoying than 80km. I believe the black defender is no more, being written off. Have not heard how but I guess misadventure must have happened.

Came through Birdsville about 3 weeks ago. Most of the roads around there are fine now after the rain they had at Easter, but the Birsdville Inside Track was still closed and still is now (particularly as they've had another couple of days rain more recently). I guess if you don't know there is going to be heavy rain (ie not in the forecast) and the road was 'open ' when you started along it, then it is really back luck and you have to make a decision whether to continue or just stop for a few days and wait for it to dry before continuing. With this road you could be stuck there for weeks if you don't continue driving, so I guess there would be a decision to make about you personal safety weighed against damage to the road. However starting the journey when you know it is going to rain, or when you know it is wet but the sign still says 'Open' then that just plain wrong and would deserve a heavy fine, IMHO. Our blog - http://landytravels.com/

Hope you enjoyed your trip. I have done a couple trips out there now and find it quite magical and very addictive. I think your last sentence sums it up nicely.

Pretty insane conditions. Hard to believe that a track so flat and seemingly featureless can have so little traction.

Also I thought it made a mockery of 'mud' tyres, ahem ...
