Don't have a Nikon dslr for you as a Canon / Leica man, but anyways, reading about your budget and your travels, you might want to consider the following:
If your goal is to capture fast action, even a dslr / lens in that price category isn't going to help. Actually, the dslr route might only be a wise decision if you intend to learn to shoot with it and upgrade the parts seperately in the process of learning. If mostly slow moving / stationary subjects, some good compacts can already shoot better quality photos than a dslr with a kit lens. In any case, have fun looking for a camera and the holidays! |

Aaaah, I thought they all snapshotted fast to catch action.
What budget do I need to be looking at? Surely a 2nd hand £600-£800 camera I can get for £300ish? It's not the actual money issue, it's the fear of breaking it that restricts my budget as I wouldn't be happy taking a £800-£1,000 camera with me on the kind of piste's I tend to fall down . I have had bad experiences with compact cameras just not taking very high resolution pictures and not truly capturing the moment. Do you have any recommendations for a really good compact camera? =================================== Steve 90 xs sw in Stonoway Grey - Sold 110 USW X-TECH |

I, unfortunately don't know too much about Nikon. The problem is, it's always a combination of body and lens. For sports / fast action, I'd think about camera's like Canon 7D. Lenses are the biggest problem.
You either get yourself a lens that can cover a wide range, with some trade offs (slower / lesser image quality), or you can get yourself a lens dedicated for what you want to do with it. You'll have a faster lens, better image quality and you'll have to buy more lenses to cover all of your needs. As photographing on a circuit I can remember being very happy with the 70-200 F4 L lens of Canon. Price / Quality of this one to me is very good. But if you also want to take a photo of your lady whilst sitting at the dinner table, you'll be standing on the other side of the restaurant. So you will be needing another lens. Looking for Nikon, someone might be able to tell you where to look for on that brand. Advising someone to get one specific camera is quite hard as it's always a bit of a guess what the exact goal is. I'd suggest typing doing some searching on camera's like the Sony RX100 (II) if you want to go very compact. Fuji has great cameras at the moment like the X20 or if you want to have exchangeable lenses the X-E2. These cameras are a lot smaller and less prone to shocks than a dslr. If they don't focus quick enough you can always set the 'zone focus' (google it for explanation) and capture the passing cars at Le Mans that way. My Leicas are manual focus only, so shooting dogs in action I do the same. Yes, the dslr is easier, but I usually get tired carrying all the weight with me all day long. |

Image quality isn't so much an issue these days! Under the right conditions an £800 dslr can be as good as a 4k one!!
It's what you want to do with it where things change. Sports photographers lemans in your case need 1. A long lense (action generally far away ) 2. A fast shutter speed to freeze the action 3 high frame rate camera These are the things you won't get in your price range A typical one camera set up with long lens for a pro Motorsport photographer would be in the region of 8-10k That's not to say you won't get great shots with a cheaper set up mind. Nikon are fab cameras. Use them everyday for work!! My 109 thread my youtube channel |

Nikon D3100 and D3200, you can get these for a good price and they are not that old. Very good entry level camera and plenty around. D90 is also a good cheaper option.
I recently sold my old D70s as I used as a backup camera, that would of been a great starting camera, you can pick them up for very little money, but they are a bit out dated now, but still very good cameras. Wex sells 2nd hand and can get some good bargains on there (I don't think they sell camera and lens, so you'd have to buy both) - http://www.wexphotographic.com/used-nikon-dslr-cameras/b3242 Park Cameras also have a good stock of 2nd hand (again, they maybe body only, so a lens would be needed) - http://www.lcegroup.co.uk/Secondhand-Searc...Results=12 One thing to think about which a lot of people don't understand. Modern Point and Shoot cameras tend to do a much better job at taking photos than a DSLR on it's Auto setting, so getting off Auto onto A,S,M modes is where it's all at, or at least P mode. If I was to advise, this would be a cracking starter kit for you;
D3100 - http://www.wexphotographic.com/buy-used-ni...y/p1546750 55-200 lens with VR (Vibration Reduction) - http://www.wexphotographic.com/buy-used-ni...s/p1547717 That would cost you £262, I think it's a bargain! It would give you 200mm of reach, which while not super telephoto, still gives a good reach. 55mm won't be too wide though, so wide shots would be sacrificed a little. You could compliment it with one of these 18-55 lens with VR - http://www.wexphotographic.com/buy-used-ni...s/p1548276 For an extra £62 So for just over your budget, you'd have a decent entry level DSLR and 2 "kit" lenses which cover wide and a decent (but not massive) telephoto reach. Just in case anyone is wondering, no, I don't have any involvement with Wex, or any other camera supplier for that matter. I guess it's a 1.6 crop camera? So that it would (in theory) give him about 300+mm reach?
Not sure how close he gets on LeMans, but it was more than sufficient for me including some further cropping on the computer from time to time. Changed to longer lenses when I switched to full frame. |

That's right, spot on and should be close enough for any trackside stuff. In fact may not need to go so tight in. Although both lenses are not "fast" lenses, bumping ISO on modern DSLRs is not so much of an issue anymore and as both of those lenses have VR, makes life even better (although panning shots of cars won't benefit from VR). Thanks for the great info, my understanding of camera's is much better now as I typically thought bigger is better in camera and nothing to do with what you are actually looking for.
X-Isle. I think I have my heart set on a D3200 now and have been given a D3100 to play with over the weekend from a colleague. That looks like a great site and thanks for taking the time to get the links for me regards Steve =================================== Steve 90 xs sw in Stonoway Grey - Sold 110 USW X-TECH |

Try to use a large sledgehammer for a very tiny nail. Sometimes you need something a bit smaller.

Haha I could probably get away with driving around in a Freelander rather than a defender and not be inconvenienced.
I don't need it, I just want it keeping up with the Jones' you might say =================================== Steve 90 xs sw in Stonoway Grey - Sold 110 USW X-TECH |
